HBT: Santana may pitch this year?
Last week the New York Post, citing Sandy Alderson, said that Johan Santana was unlikely to pitch in the majors this year. ?Today the New York Post, citing Sandy Alderson, said that it?s conceivable that Johan Santana would pitch in the majors this year.
I dunno. This is just one of those things I pass along. ?I at least know that, given the pattern, the ?Johan Santana has a setback? is so likely a story in the next ten days that Vegas has taken it off the board.
Or it could be that Sandy Alderson really loves effin? with the New York Post.

New genome sequence could improve important agricultural crops
ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2011) ? An international team of scientists, funded in the UK by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), has sequenced the genome of a Chinese cabbage variety of a plant called Brassica rapa, a close relative of oilseed rape. The research, published Aug. 28 in the journal Nature Genetics, could help improve the efficiency of oilseed rape breeding, as well as that of a host of other important food and oil crops.
The project was conducted by an international consortium involving researchers working across four continents, with the majority of the data generated in China. The UK's contribution came from scientists at the John Innes Centre in Norwich and Rothamsted Research in Hertfordshire, both of which receive strategic funding from BBSRC.
Oilseed rape is an important source of vegetable oils for cooking and industrial applications and its production has doubled in the last 15 years. It is an unusual hybrid which contains the entire genomes of two other plants: Brassica rapa and another closely related species called Brassica oleracea. By sequencing Brassica rapa, researchers are able to access half of oilseed rape's genes without having to wrestle with its large and complicated genome.
Professor Ian Bancroft led the research at the John Innes Centre. He explains: "Oilseed rape is the second most important oil crop in the world and the most important in Europe. Sequencing its genes will provide breeders with the tools to improve the efficiency of developing new varieties, but this is difficult because it has a really complicated genome. Thankfully, because it is a hybrid, nature has already divided up the oilseed rape genome into two more manageable chunks, one of which we have now sequenced."
Brassica rapa and oilseed rape are both brassicas, a group which also includes broccoli, turnip, sprouts and cabbages. Together, this important group of plants accounts for more than 10 percent of the world's vegetable and vegetable oil production and, despite their apparent diversity, they are all closely related. This enables scientists to apply the insights they gain by sequencing one species, such as Brassica rapa to improving the breeding efficiency of a range of crops essential to ensuring global food security.
Professor Bancroft continues: "Few people would confuse a turnip with a cauliflower and yet, despite coming in a range of shapes and sizes, brassicas are all very closely related. This means that the many of the 41,000 genes which we found in Brassica rapa will also be found in other brassicas and the insights we gain from having this sequence could be useful for improving everything from plants grown to produce chainsaw oils to the sprouts on your Christmas dinner."
The Brassica rapa sequence was produced using a technology which breaks the DNA into small segments before reassembling the complete genome. Throughout its evolution Brassica rapa has triplicated its genome meaning that the task of assembling the final picture posed a particular challenge to the scientists and the technology.
Professor Douglas Kell, Chief Executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, said: "Plants have a tendency to multiply their genomes as they evolve. This means that many important agricultural crops like wheat, potato and oilseed rape have much larger and more complex genomes than most animals, including humans.
"Helping breeders produce new varieties of these staple crops will be essential to ensuring our future food security, so scientists must use their ingenuity to find ways to overcome the challenges posed by these massive genomes. This research shows what can be achieved by applying the latest technology and by combining the expertise of scientists across the world."

After Irene, a look at recent US disaster costs (AP)
Insurers have paid out claims totaling almost $25 billion in this year's disasters_ compared with the typical $30 billion total for a whole year ? and peak hurricane season is less than halfway through.
Hurricanes often account for half of the industry's annual payout.
Tropical Storm Irene was the 10th U.S. weather disaster this year to have caused more than $1 billion in damage, the National Weather Service says. Even in inflation-adjusted dollars, that's the largest number of major events in 30 years of record-keeping.
Here's a look at this year's biggest weather catastrophes, by estimated cost:
? Tropical Storm Irene (Aug. 27-28): The first big storm of the Atlantic hurricane season threatened population centers along the East Coast. It caused extensive flooding and some wind damage but weakened before hitting the most populated areas. It has led to the deaths of 38 people in 11 states.
Cost: $3 billion to $5 billion in insured losses; estimated $7 billion total.
? Flooding in upper Midwest (Summer): Melted snow from the Rocky Mountains combined with heavy rains to flood the Missouri and Souris rivers' watersheds in seven states.
Cost: More than $2 billion so far.
? Flooding of the Mississippi River (Spring, Summer): Heavy rainfall in the Ohio Valley combined with melting snow to flood the Mississippi and the rivers that feed it. It led to at least two deaths.
Cost: $2 billion to $4 billion.
? Drought, heat wave and wildfires in southern plains and Southwest (Spring, Summer): High heat, a lack of rain and then fires ravaged parts of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, Arkansas and Louisiana.
Cost: More than $5 billion.
? Tornadoes in the Midwest/Southeast (May 22-27): About 180 tornadoes in more than a dozen states caused 177 deaths, mostly from a giant twister in Joplin, Mo.
Cost: More than $4.9 billion in insured losses; total cost not available.
? Tornadoes in the Midwest/Southeast/Ohio Valley (April 25-30): Around 305 tornadoes caused 327 deaths.
Cost: More than $6.6 billion in insured losses; total cost not available.
? Tornadoes in the Midwest/Southeast (April 14-16): About 160 tornadoes, relatively weak compared to the other outbreaks. There 38 related deaths.
Cost: More than $1.4 billion in insured losses; total cost not available.
? Tornadoes in Midwest/Southeast (April 8-11): About 59 tornadoes in nine states.
Cost: More than $1.5 billion in insured losses; total cost not available.
? Tornadoes in Midwest/Southeast (April 4-5): Ten states were hit by about 46 tornadoes.
Cost: More than $1.6 billion in insured losses, 9 deaths; total cost not available.
? Blizzard in central and Northeastern states (Jan. 29-Feb. 3): The storm dumped several feet of snow across much of the nation and is blamed in 36 deaths.
Cost: More than $1.1 billion in insured losses; total cost not available.

Venture Capital Goes Behind the Web ? HispanicBusiness.com ...
Silicon Valley?s largest venture capital firms are raising their stakes in so-called enterprise companies, which provide behind-the- scene services like software and analytics to business customers. While the spotlight in the latest technology boom has been trained on a cluster of popular consumer applications like Facebook, Groupon and Zynga, investors are increasingly taking a shine to the startups that build the infrastructure for those Internet powerhouses. Silicon Valley?s largest venture capital firms are raising their stakes in so-called enterprise companies, which provide software, analytics and other services to business customers. They are betting that the emerging players in this space, typically considered the least sexy part of technology, will siphon market share from lumbering giants like Oracle, Microsoft and SAP. ?There?s a manifest destiny, and the old guard is slowly being shunted aside, as start-ups eat their lunch,? said Scott Weiss, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, a venture capital firm whose portfolio includes enterprise players like Box, a data storage service, and Asana, a software maker. The technological and cultural gap between the giants and the start-ups is vast. Enterprise services have commonly featured costly, multiyear licensing agreements, installed software and in- house solutions. But the old model is eroding, disrupted by a new group of Web-based companies that offer their products remotely, through what is known as the cloud. As Internet use explodes, more companies are looking for low- cost solutions that can be installed immediately and scaled up or down rapidly. Access to cloud-based services can be gained by any employee through the Web, and data use is not restricted by the number of on-site servers. and the services are often less expensive because their charges are based on use, rather than the number of licenses. ?Historically, a company may buy some heavyweight software from SAP, put it on an Oracle database and use EMC?s servers,? said Ping Li, of Accel Partners, a venture capital firm. ?But you look at Google, Facebook, they don?t have that stuff ? they need tools with more scale, more flexibility.? Mr. Weiss points to his firm?s investment portfolio. Of about 60 consumer and business-related companies, including Groupon, Twitter and Zynga, not one is a customer of the enterprise giant Oracle. Instead of huge sales forces, the enterprise start-ups often rely on word-of-mouth marketing and free trials to lure customers. Atlassian, a software development and collaboration tool, hit $100 million in revenue without hiring a single salesperson. last year, the company picked up $60 million from Accel ? the venture firm?s largest software investment. ?We are instantly one to many on the Web,? said Jay Simons, Atlassian?s president. The strategic shift is expected to lead to mergers and acquisitions, as the older players, like Microsoft, Oracle and SAP, face pressure. so far this year, enterprise deal-making has risen 82.7 percent in value, to $20 billion, accounting for 14.5 percent of all technology deals ? the highest level since 2003, according to data from Thomson Reuters. In Silicon Valley, the competition for start-ups is also intensifying. last Thursday, Andreessen Horowitz announced it had led a $15 million investment round in GoodData, a Web-based business analytics platform. Earlier this week, Wanova, a desktop management service, raised $10 million and Pure Storage, a maker of high- capacity storage drives, raised $30 million. ?In the next couple of years, our focus on enterprise will increase,? said Ted Schlein, a partner at the venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, noting that valuations in the area had jumped about 30 percent in the last year. Accel, one of the earliest investors in Facebook, is also ?focusing much more on these ?consumerized? software services,? according to a partner, Richard Wong. GoodData?s chief executive, Roman Stanek, said he had held discussions with 12 venture firms for his latest financing round. In the end, six competed aggressively, before Stanek picked Andreessen Horowitz. ?Enterprise tends to move at a glacial pace,? said Stanek, a veteran entrepreneur who has previously sold two software businesses. ?But the consolidation of the industry is accelerating, and the segmentation is becoming more obvious.? Still, these startups face significant challenges on the way to becoming the next Oracle. Adoption can be slow, since corporations often hesitate to reconfigure big chunks of their technology infrastructure. some have to get over the psychological hurdle of trusting everything to the cloud. As Web-based applications become more robust and reliable, confidence goes up, but services are not bulletproof. Earlier this month, Amazon?s Web Services suffered two failures, which momentarily crippled Internet businesses like Netflix and Foursquare. Despite the hiccups, venture capital backers say they remain confident in this next generation of enterprise names, seeing them as part of a natural development of the Web. as they see it, they are also prime targets for the aging giants or more established upstarts like Salesforce, a $15 billion software company built during the last dot-com boom, and VMware, which has made several cloud-centric purchases this year, including SlideRocket and Socialcast. Like their consumer peers, these start-ups are finding the public markets welcoming. Jive Software, a company backed by Kleiner Perkins, filed to go public late Wednesday. ?In the venture world, we talk a lot about the leading trends in social and mobile but underneath the consumer-facing side, foundational elements are also shifting,? mr. Wong said. ?The new enterprise companies are the picks and shovels that sit behind these consumer startups.?

8 dead as typhoon slams northern Philippines (AP)
MANILA, Philippines ? Slow-moving Typhoon Nanmadol remained dangerous Sunday despite weakening as it struck the tip of the mountainous northern Philippines, leaving at least eight people dead and scuttling a visit by a U.S. Navy battleship group, officials said.
Taiwan issued sea and land warnings and planned to evacuate about 6,000 people in its eastern and southern regions as it braced for the typhoon. Troops and rescue equipment were deployed for any contingency, Taiwan's Defense Ministry said.
With its enormous cloud band, the typhoon drenched the northern Philippines with rain for days before pummeling the area with fierce winds, setting off landslides and floods and knocking down walls that left at least eight people dead and six others missing, said Benito Ramos, who heads the Office of Civil Defense.
Strong winds knocked down a concrete wall which hit a small eatery in the capital's suburban Quezon City on Sunday, killing a man and injuring two others, police said.
In the northern mountain resort city of Baguio, a garbage dump's concrete wall collapsed and buried three shanties under tons of garbage Saturday, killing two children. Their grandmother remained missing, Ramos said.
Five others perished in landslides or drowned, including a fisherman whose body was found floating Saturday off eastern Catanduanes province. A decision by many villagers to flee to safety before the typhoon struck and vigilance helped reduce the number of casualties, Ramos said.
In northern Benguet province, bus driver Reynaldo Carlos ordered his passengers to flee Saturday after seeing mud, debris and boulders surging down a mountainside toward the vehicle, which was stuck on a muddy road.
The bus, its engine still running, was swept down a 200-foot (60-meter) ravine after everyone escaped, officials said.
"I was trembling with fear after I realized how close we were to death," Carlos told The Associated Press by telephone.
About 20 landslides blocked roads in Benguet, a gold-mining region about 130 miles (210 kilometers) north of Manila. More than 57,000 villagers fled their homes there and in 10 other northern provinces at the height of the typhoon, officials said.
U.S. officials postponed a Manila visit by the U.S. Navy's John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group originally scheduled for this weekend because of the bad weather.
The U.S. Embassy said all tours of the aircraft carrier, as well as a reception on board, had been canceled.
Domestic airlines also canceled more than a dozen flights to areas affected by the typhoon in the northern and central Philippines.
Nanmadol had sustained wind of 121 miles (195 kilometers) per hour and gusts of 143 mph (230 kph) Friday, becoming the strongest typhoon to hit the Philippines so far this year. It weakened after grazing northern Cagayan province Saturday. It was expected to skirt the northernmost Batanes islands with 75 mph (120 kph) winds Sunday before starting to blow away from the country, Philippine government forecasters said.
Nanmadol was expected to hit Taiwan as early as Monday, Taiwan's central weather bureau said. It urged residents to prepare for strong winds and torrential rain, and warned there could be landslides in mountainous regions and flooding in low-lying areas.
On Sunday, TV footage showed parts of eastern and southern Taiwan drenched with rain. Strong winds blew a van across a road in the eastern Taiwanese county of Taitung.
Ferries connecting Taiwan's mainland to islets and some domestic flights were canceled. Train service in southern and eastern Taiwan was to be suspended, and two major roads in eastern and central Taiwan were to be closed starting late Sunday afternoon.
Two eastern Taiwanese counties said people did not have to go to school or work on Monday.

The Village Center will have shops, dining and an outdoor entertainment plaza.
The third phase features 88 suites ranging in size from studios, 1- and 2-bedrooms and 2 bedrooms with a den. The units are priced from $117,400 to $269,900. Talasa's dramatic exterior finishing of ledge stone, hardi-panel and wood siding and contemporary, modern style suites have been a big draw for buyers since the Mibroc Group launched the community in 2008.
Talasa smashed all one day real estate sales records in Kamloops with $34 million in sales. The first two condominium buildings are completed and the third will be completed in November, 2011.
"Talasa appeals to those who want to live a resort lifestyle whether they are locals, retirees or vacationers from Vancouver or Calgary," say Darryl Caunt, president of the Mibroc Group and managing partner of Talasa, "Overall sales have not seen massive increases in the last few years but it has been steady at Talasa. This is because Kamloops offers incredible natural beauty and unrivaled recreational activities and Talasa delivers authentic resort living."The Sun Rivers Golf Resort Community and Talasa are situated on a high desert plateau overlooking the beautiful Thompson Valley, the Thompson River and Kamloops. Designed by renowned Canadian golf course architect, Graham Cooke, Sun Rivers is one of the few desert golf courses in Canada. Talasa is 355 kilometers east of Vancouver on the Trans-Canada highway and located at the junction of two branches of the Thompson River and four major highways near Kamloops Lake. Kamloops offers unrivaled recreational opportunities including golf, skiing, boating, hiking, fishing, water sports, mountain biking and is an easy drive from major centers like Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Seattle.
"In the past, we have received a lot of interest primarily from Kamloops because Talasa's price points offer a viable alternative to the rental market, but this year we have had interest from Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, and the Lower Mainland too," says Caunt.
As the developer of Talasa, the Mibroc Group brings a successful track record to the project. The Mibroc team has completed project experience in both Canada and the U.S. and has developed over $5 billion in residential, commercial and resort real estate.

Hunted in Tripoli, Gaddafi hurls defiance (Reuters)
TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Muammar Gaddafi taunted his Libyan enemies and their Western backers on Thursday as rebel forces battled pockets of loyalists across Tripoli in an ever more urgent quest to find and silence the fugitive strongman.
Rumors of Gaddafi or his sons being cornered, even sighted, swirled among excitable rebel fighters engaged in heavy machinegun and rocket exchanges. But two days after his compound was overrun, hopes of a swift end to six months of war were still being frustrated by fierce rearguard actions.
Western powers demanded Gaddafi's surrender and worked to release frozen Libyan state funds, hoping to ease hardships and start reconstruction in the oil-rich state. But with loyalists holding out in the capital, in Gaddafi's coastal home city and deep in the inland desert, violence could go on for some time, testing the ability of the government in waiting to keep order.
"The tribes ... must march on Tripoli," Gaddafi said in an audio message broadcast on a sympathetic TV channel. "Do not leave Tripoli to those rats, kill them, defeat them quickly.
"The enemy is delusional, NATO is retreating," he shouted, sounding firmer and clearer than in a similar speech released on Wednesday. Though his enemies believe Gaddafi, 69, is still in the capital, they fear he could flee by long-prepared escape routes, using tunnels and bunkers, to rally an insurgency.
Diehards numbering perhaps in the hundreds were keeping at bay squads of irregular, anti-Gaddafi fighters who had swept into the capital on Sunday and who were now rushing from one site to another, firing assault rifles, machineguns and anti-aircraft cannon bolted to the backs of pick-up trucks.
In a southern district close to the notorious prison of Abu Salim, the rebel forces launched a concerted assault, sweeping from house to house.
SUPPLIES, OIL EXPORTS
While random gunfire broke out periodically across the city, some of its two million residents ventured out to stock up on supplies. Aid agencies sounded an alarm about food, water and also medical supplies, especially for hundreds of wounded.
But the new leadership said it had found huge stockpiles in Tripoli which would meet all demands for food, drugs and fuel.
In another sign of optimism, the official taking charge of financial and energy affairs told Reuters that Libya hoped to resume exporting crude oil in months and that damage to oil facilities during the fighting had been less than feared.
"The NOC (National Oil Corporation) initial estimate is that we can have about 500,000 to 600,000 barrels within two to three months," Ali Tarhouni said. "And then we ramp this up to the normal, which is about 1.6 (million). My expectation is that this will be done within a year or so.
"The state of the oil fields are a lot better than expected ... Most of the fields are more than 90 percent fine."
It was the first time an official from the rebel National Transitional Council was seen in the capital taking up the reins of government.
Nonetheless, in order to begin installing an administration in a nation run by an eccentric personality cult for 42 years, to offer jobs to young men now bearing arms and to heal ethnic, tribal and other divisions that have been exacerbated by civil war, Libya's new masters are anxious for hard cash quickly.
"We need urgent help," Mahmoud Jibril, the head of the government-in-waiting, told Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in Milan as Western leaders tried to persuade others at the United Nations to ease sanctions and a freeze on Libyan foreign assets that were imposed to punish Gaddafi.
Some governments, notably in Africa where there was some sympathy for Gaddafi's view of his Western enemies as colonialist aggressors, have been reluctant to agree so far.
FEAR OF FAILURE
After a meeting of officials in Istanbul, the Contact Group of allies against Gaddafi called on Libyans to avoid revenge.
"The participants attached utmost importance to the realization of national reconciliation in Libya," it said. "They agreed that such a process should be based on principles of inclusiveness, avoidance of retribution and vengeance."
The group also urged the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution freeing up cash quickly.
Jibril said the uprising, the bloodiest so far of the Arab Spring, could fall apart if funds were not forthcoming quickly: "The biggest destabilizing element would be the failure ... to deliver the necessary services and pay the salaries of the people who have not been paid for months.
"Our priorities cannot be carried out by the government without having the necessary money immediately," he said.
Gaddafi's opponents fear that he may rally an insurgency, as did Saddam Hussein in Iraq, should he remain at large and, perhaps, in control of funds salted away for such a purpose.
Western powers, mindful of the bloodshed in Iraq, have made clear they do not want to engage their troops in Libya. But a U.S. State Department spokeswoman said Washington would look favorably on any Libyan request for U.N. police assistance -- something some say might aid a transition to democracy.
HUNTING GADDAFI
Rebel leaders, offering a million-dollar reward, say the war will be over only when Gaddafi is found, "dead or alive."
The ex-international high representative in Bosnia, Paddy Ashdown, told Reuters there was a need for speed if Libya's new rulers were to avoid a lingering threat from their predecessor, unlike what transpired in the former Yugoslavia and Iraq.
"The best time to capture these defeated leaders is immediately after the conflict finishes," Ashdown said. "The longer it takes the more chance they have of being spirited away to a place which is much more difficult to find."
The United States and NATO are also deeply concerned about possible looting and resale of weapons from Libyan arsenals as Muammar Gaddafi's rule crumbles, though the U.S. State Department said it believes Libya's stocks of concentrated uranium and mustard agent are secure.
With fighting raging in Tripoli, there was evidence of the kind of bitter bloodletting in recent days that the rebel leaders are anxious to stop in the interests of uniting Libyans, including former Gaddafi supporters, in a democracy.
A Reuters correspondent counted 30 bodies, apparently of troops and gunmen who had fought for Gaddafi, at a site in central Tripoli. At least two had their hands bound. One was strapped to a hospital trolley with a drip still in his arm.
All the bodies had been riddled with bullets.
Elsewhere, a British medical worker said she had counted 17 bodies who she believed were of prisoners executed by Gaddafi's forces. One wounded man said he had survived the incident, when, he said, prison guards had sprayed inmates with gunfire on Tuesday as the rebel forces entered Gaddafi's compound.
French magazine Paris Match quoted an intelligence source saying Libyan commandos found evidence that he had stayed at a safe house which they raided on Wednesday. NATO was helping the rebels with intelligence and reconnaissance, Britain said, and its jets kept up their bombing campaign overnight.
"There are areas of resistance by the regime which has had considerable levels of military expertise, still has stockpiles of weapons and still has the ability for command and control," said British Defense Minister Liam Fox.
"They may take some time to completely eliminate and it is likely there will be some frustrating days ahead before the Libyan people are completely free of the Gaddafi legacy."
Nonetheless, many in Tripoli count themselves happy already that Gaddafi has gone. "I was nine years old when Gaddafi came to power and I've always hoped I wouldn't die before I saw this day," said Ali Salem al-Gharyani, choking back tears.
"I am now 50 years old and this is the first time, seeing Gaddafi gone, that I have experienced true joy in my life."

Emile Weil, Architect of New Orleans' Landmarks: 5531 St. Charles ...
5531 St. Charles Ave.
Historical research by John Hilbert and Shar Mansukhani and originally published in Preservation in Print.
Architect Emile Weil reputedly loved this 22-room Italianate / Beaux Arts Renaissance Revival?house above all the other St. Charles Avenue and Audubon Place residences he designed. It took four years to complete the two-and-a-half-story palace ? with its stone fa?ade, balustrade and paired Ionic columns, grand interior foyer, replicated Versailles staircase and long ballroom ? but by 1916 businessman Emmanuel V. Benjamin was ensconced in his dream home. Legend has it that his son, who grew up in the mansion, was such an eccentric that a group of men started ?The Benjamin Club? just to tell and retell their favorite stories about him.
Paul Maloney Jr., son of Congressman Paul Maloney, bought the house in 1943, and 12 years later sold it to J. Edgar Monroe, a self-made millionaire and philanthropist. Monroe had a taste for opulent homes ? his other house being a 100,000-square-foot cottage in Newport, RI. He died without heirs and his foundation sold the mansion to Michael Christovich, who renovated the interior under the direction of architect Peter Trapolin and decorating doyenne Nina Sloss. Davis Jahncke of Jahncke + Burns Architects designed the pool and poolhouse. Christovich donated a preservation easement to the PRC, which means any changes or alterations to the exterior must be approved by the PRC to ensure the protection of the historic integrity.
Tracy and Susan Krohn bought the property in January 2005, and soon Mrs. Krohn and interior designer/hair dresser Burke Saucier were off to Europe. They shopped Paris for chandeliers and antiques, bought French and Italian silk to create drapes hand stitched to Burke?s specifications, and shipped home a hand-carved Italian door to grace the entrance. They applied extensive embellishments to the moldings and medallions (including one designed by Burke using 360 pieces of plaster.) They were still decorating when Hurricane Katrina bore down, and the Krohns and Burke hurriedly flew off to Las Vegas.
Relocating to Houston, Susan Krohn put the house on the market and in the interim rented it to author Michael Lewis. The enormity of the property was described by Lewis in an article he wrote for portfolio.com, Sept. 18, 2008. He and his wife had found the only way to locate each other in the house was by cellphone, so one afternoon she called him on his mobile.
?Where are you?? she asked. ?I?m in the house taking care of the kids,? I said, a little indignantly. ?Well, you can?t be watching them very closely,? she said, ?because I?m in the house taking care of the kids.?
When Fred and Jennifer Heebe bought the mansion in 2009, it needed structural work and an interior that would better suit their family so they hired The Hopkins Company to lead the project. Architect Steve Quarles assisted with the endeavor. The Heebes worked closely with PRC easement director Leah Tubbs in repairing the fa?ade. Gerrie Bremermann, known for her blend of fine antiques, simple lines and sophisticated paint palette created the interior design. Her eye for completing a space is evident in the Heebe?s gracious living room. They added a chandelier with a plaster medallion by Tommy Lachin, hung Louisiana art collected with the assistance of Jean Bragg, and laid beautiful rugs found in New York. They also replaced all light fixtures, hardware and curtains throughout, graced the large entrance hall with a piano from M.S. Rau Antiques, and modified a rear room of the house to create a bar and family room whose walls are lined with Louisiana cypress. Heebe home was a perfect and spacious place to host the 2010 Holiday Home Tour Patron Party.

A Weil-designed two-story triplex at 5428 St. Charles Ave. (pictured to the left) is proposed for demolition. NCDC will consider the proposal on September 6, 2011.

16 killed in bombing on UN building in Nigeria (AP)
ABUJA, Nigeria ? A car laden with explosives rammed through two gates and blew up at the United Nations' offices in Nigeria's capital Friday, killing at least 16 people and shattering part of the concrete structure. A radical Muslim sect blamed for a series of assassinations and bombings in the country claimed responsibility for the attack.
The brazen attack, carried out as the four-story U.N. offices teemed with staff, comes as Africa's most populous nation faces the growing threat of both homegrown and international terrorism. The radical sect known locally as Boko Haram from northeast Nigeria have carried out attacks in the country's capital, though never on a foreign target.
U.N. deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said: "We do not have any confirmation as yet who was responsible." However, a spokesman for Boko Haram claimed the attack in a conversation with the BBC's Hausa language shortwave radio service, which is widely trusted and listened to throughout Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect, with reported links to al-Qaida, has made such claims before to the service.
Boko Haram, whose name means "Western education is sacrilege," wants to implement a strict version of Shariah law in the nation and is vehemently opposed to Western education and culture.
The attack Friday morning mirrored others carried out recently by the group. Witnesses told The Associated Press that a sedan rammed through two separate gates at the U.N. compound as guards tried to stop the vehicle. The suicide bomber inside crashed the car into the main reception area and detonated the explosives, inflicting the most damage possible, a spokesman for the Nigerian National Emergency Management Agency said.
"I saw scattered bodies," said Michael Ofilaje, a UNICEF worker at the building, which he said shook with the explosion. "Many people are dead."
The Nigerian Red Cross reported at least 16 people died in the attack, with at least 11 others injured, said Umar Mairiga, the organization's disaster management director. Nigerian Health Minister Mohammad Ali Pate made a public appeal for blood donation on the widely listened-to BBC Hausa language service, saying there were at least 60 injured people at the National Hospital in Abuja.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called it "an assault on those who devote their lives to helping others."
The buildings, known as U.N. House, had offices for about 400 employees working for 26 U.N. humanitarian and development agencies. Authorities were still trying to account for everyone in the building at the time of the blast.
"We condemn this terrible act, utterly," secretary-general Ban told reporters at U.N. headquarters. "We do not yet have precise casualty figures but they are likely to be considerable. A number of people are dead; many more are wounded."
The building, located in the same neighborhood as the U.S. embassy and other diplomatic posts in Abuja, houses offices of a number of U.N. agencies including the U.N. Development Program, UNICEF and the U.N. Population Fund.
The attack was the most deadly on the United Nations since 17 U.N. civilian staff members were killed along with dozens of others in two terrorist car bombings that targeted U.N. and other premises in Algiers on Dec. 11, 2007. It came just days after the U.N. marked the eighth anniversary of the Aug. 19, 2003 bombing of U.N. headquarters in Baghdad that killed 15 U.N. staff including top envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello and seven others.
The explosion punched a huge hole in the building. Workers brought three large cranes to the site within hours of the attack, trying to pull away the concrete and rubble to find survivors. Others at the site stood around, stunned, as medical workers began carrying out what appeared to be the dead.
"This is getting out of hand," said a U.N. staffer who identified himself as Bodunrin. "If they can get into the U.N. House, they can reach anywhere."
Ali Tikko, who was in a building 100 yards (meters) from the site of the blast when it occurred said, "I heard one big boom."
"I see a number of people lying on the floor ? at least four or five. I cannot see if they are dead. There are a lot of security around," Tikko said by telephone.
Local police spokesman Jimoh Moshood said police are investigating. In a statement, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's office called the attack "barbaric, senseless and cowardly." The statement also promised to increase security in the nation's capital.
"President Jonathan reaffirms the federal government's total commitment to vigorously combat the incursion of all forms of terrorism into Nigeria, and wishes to reassure all Nigerians and the international community that his administration will spare no effort to bring the perpetrators to justice," the statement read.
The secretary-general said he was sending Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro and U.N. security chief Gregory Starr to Abuja immediately to meet with Nigerian authorities and to "respond to this emergency."
Nigeria, a nation of 150 million, is split between a largely Christian south and Muslim north. In recent months, the country has faced an increasing threat from Boko Haram. The sect has carried out assassinations and bombings, including the June car bombing in Abuja of the national headquarters of Nigeria's federal police that killed at least two people.
Earlier this month, the commander for U.S. military operations in Africa said Boko Haram may be trying to link with two al-Qaida-linked groups in other African countries to mount joint attacks in Nigeria.
Gen. Carter Ham told AP on Aug. 17 during a visit to Nigeria that "multiple sources" indicate Boko Haram made contacts with al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, which operates in northwest Africa, and with al-Shabab in Somalia.
"I think it would be the most dangerous thing to happen not only to the Africans, but to us as well," Carter said.

HBT: Rockies acquire Kouzmanoff from A's
Kevin Kouzmanoff has been stuck in the minors since the A?s demoted the struggling third baseman to Triple-A in mid-June and today they traded him (and some cash) to the Rockies for a player to be named later.
Kouzmanoff and his $4.75 million salary went unclaimed on waivers back in June, allowing the A?s to outright him off the 40-man roster, so it?s safe to say that the player to be named later won?t be anything special.
In fact, according to Jane Lee of MLB.com the deal won?t even get him back to the majors right away, as Colorado plans to assign him to their Triple-A team.
Kouzmanoff is under team control for next season, but there?s little chance of the Rockies actually offering him arbitration because that would essentially lock them into a one-year deal worth at least $4.5 million. Presumably they?ll call him up once rosters expand on September 1 and then possibly try to negotiate a lower salary for next season, with Kouzmanoff serving as merely a fallback option at third base heading into the offseason.

What Makes A Book Great Read? : Arts & Entertainment
Top books to read are not always easy to find. Through pure popularity there are a lot of books that seem to be top books but are they really? Why? If a book becomes very popular through many sales this, in my opinion, does not necessarily mean it is one of the top books to read.
The secret to a lot of these books is simply great marketing. What actually makes a book one of the top books to read?
Some people might like Westerns, and consider this genre the best, most people do not. Likes and dislikes are purely subjective.
There are many genre specific stories people love like fantasy, action, romance, adventure, mystery, philosophy, spirituality, etc. I think that most people enjoy straightforward linear story telling, when others like none linear, poetic, or symbolic genres. To love or not love any particular book there are obviously lots of different reasons.
The great thing about Creator is that it almost has all of the above elements, whether the reader is aware of this or not, and that is what makes it one of the top books to read for me. Than again why I like a book will be different to why you like a book, so to put it in a simple way: Creator is worth reading purely for the entertainment value, it is superbly written.
The story in a nut-shell:
In the days of yore when the Christian God sends his only son to save the wretched human race, the Olympian spirits send a saviour of their own. Unlike Jesus, the pagan son of gods was not without sin. He would not ignore temptations, or desire.
So Daedalus Rufus, In his quest to ease the torment of a secret curse, becomes a mortal god to the people, and he ends up creating a heaven on earth. He turns misery into bliss, and doldrums into merriment and games, he has the power to wield miracles.
Although that is the linear story in a nutshell, there is way more to discover hidden between the lines: the symbolic, the profound elements.
Creator is one of the top books to read because it is masterfully written like a Charles Dickens novel, but is fast-paced. Creator combines ancient Rome with modern quantum concepts and philosophies, juxtaposes old with the new. This really is an original book, taking place in our bloodiest history, that is at the same time a modern myth.
Creator is really diverse on so many levels. My tip: give it a try, and it might become one of your top books to read.

By way of a linear motion, a manual operated sleeve valve is capable of regulating an item flow. This exposes the amount of outlets on the sleeve, Discount Prom Dressesnecessary for the correct rate of flow for a material being processed. The valve includes a casing of a flange shape at each side so when used in a manual capacity, it is generally regulated having a handle or a wheel.
A credit card applicatoin involving a control sleeve valve is enabled through the incorporation in the sleeve design of multiple tapered outlets. These outlets are made inside a manner which causes water streams to become directed towards a place at the center of a downstream discharge pipe. The sleeve valve is made for operation in a flow range, without harm to cavitations for that specified conditions.
A benefit to users may be the simplicity in design of a manual sleeve valve, which is a factor, related to minimum downtime and low maintenance costs. Low maintenance is assisted by the inner sleeve being the only real area of the valve subject to wear. Otherwise, the valve doesn?t possess any mechanical parts and also the utilization of an actuator is not needed. Many applications require the material or fluid flow is regulated or throttled in a certain point, between full flow and a minimum rate. It?s a process that might be achieved with control pinch valves through the introduction of flow resistance, or by-passing.
A manual pinch valve has the ability and beneficial operating feature to be in a position to connect straight to a closing mechanism and ensure a forced opening. It is an action achieved by what is usually called opening tabs. The watering of the garden or washing of an automobile follow the principle operation of a manual operated pinch valve, by the simple procedure for compressing the pinch between your fingers and shutting off the water.
The processing of many and varied substances from the thinnest of gases to radio active materials, is possible with a control pinch valve.Designer Prom Dresses This is a recognized valve utilized in continuous industrial service, in varying applications including the processing of highly corrosive chemicals, hot steam and abrasive slurries. In addition to the valve???s capabilities in processing difficult materials, would be that the manual operated pinch valve is capable of doing operating in extreme variations of temperature.
Various accessories are for sale to use with a control pinch valve such as positioners and pressure regulators, among others. A check valve definition could be a two-port component, because it has two openings in the casing for the entry and exit of the material flow. Manual pinch valves are used in many and varied applications, more popular as a part of everyday household equipment.
In the world of offshore platforms in the gas and oil industries, industrial fittings and components are used in a variety of operations. Control pinch valves are an integral part of applications during these industries. They include sub-sea control systems and offshore production involving pipelines so that as these kinds of operations require strict norms and measures, equipment and components must be manufactured to some high quality, providing reliable performances using the minimum of downtime.
Manual pinch valves are recognized for their excellent potential to deal with chemical and atmospheric agents, as well as having the capability to perform in adverse weather conditions with a low maintenance factor. The full opening of this valve allows the fluid to flow in a direct line, with the collar from the pinch replacing the requirement for a gasket. This course of action simultaneously helps in the maintaining of positive control over the fluid flow. A manual operated pinch valve is constructed with a casing, flanged or screwed in the ends, by having an insert elastomer pinch. The closing of the valve, whether a screw type or flanged, is either by manual means or air pressure.
Manual operated pinch valves have found greater influence in industries involving fibrous and corrosive applications. It?s a valve highly suitable for these demanding applications, to be able to function as a way of blocking and shutting easily. For people that use the valves, a particular benefit is it can be operated by a hand-wheel or automatically. The interest in manual pinch valves has been created by many industrial processing plants, finding the way to improve and become more effective within the controlling of production and operation related costs.
To meet demands of industrial specialized applications, the crucial inner sleeve from the valve is manufactured in a number of elastomer compounds and qualities. Control pinch valves are recognized for their versatility in all forms of applications that require specific operating temperatures. The flow of fluids, liquid or gas, in one direction is controlled by valves under various names. These could be identified as check valves, non-return valves or one-way valves. A manual rubber valve includes a basic construction form, that includes a body having a pipe connection and components for sealing functions, usually operated by an actuator.
The performance capabilities of the valves are put into by their ability to operate effectively with extreme pressures, which could vary between a high vacuum to pressures of a lot of money per square inch. The manual operated rubber valve is a component generally regarded as a common household item. However, it is respected being an essential a part of many industrial processes.

Obama statement on Libya planned
VINEYARD HAVEN, Massachusetts (AP) ? President Barack Obama is going before microphones and cameras this afternoon to discuss the fast-moving developments in Libya.
His statement is planned for 2 p.m. EDT (1900 GMT), according to his spokesman, Josh Earnest, who's with the vacationing president on Martha's Vineyard, an island off Massachusetts.
Earnest said Obama was updated early Monday by John Brennan, his deputy national security adviser, on the rebel seizure of much of Libya's capital, Tripoli. Obama is also hosting a secure conference call with his national security team from his rented farm complex.
Earnest added that as far as U.S. officials know, Moammar Gadhafi is still in Libya. He says there's "no information" that the Libyan leader has left.
