Apple and Google Talk Arbitration in Smartphone Spat

by John Paczkowski on November 17, 2012

Apple and Google haven?t yet buried their respective hatchets over the patent litigation between them, but evidently they are willing to put them aside for a moment in the hopes of negotiating a broader peace.

A new court filing in the pair?s infringement case reveal that Apple and Google have been discussing the idea of resolving their dispute over standard essential patents via arbitration. Earlier this month, the companies exchanged proposals about hammering out some sort of global licensing agreement over standards essential patents, and both seem to agree that binding arbitration is the way to go. From the filing:

Apple is also interested in resolving its dispute with Motorola completely and agrees that binding arbitration may be the best vehicle to resolve the parties? dispute. Accordingly, on November 8, 2012, Apple sent Motorola a letter agreeing that the parties should enter into arbitration and proposing the parameters of the arbitration.

On November 13, 2012, Motorola responded to Apple setting forth further proposals for the scope of the arbitration, and the parties are now negotiating how to proceed. Included in the parties? discussions are proposals for a stand-still to the parties? pending litigations.

class="memo" style="background:#faf5e5;font-style:normal;">

A stand down in litigation? Binding arbitration? That?s a remarkable easing of tensions between two companies that have been sparring the way Apple and Google have. What happened?

A few things:

    First, some background ?

  • We need to remember that Apple CEO Tim Cook hates patent litigation, which he sees as a ?pain in the ass.? And he?s gone on record saying Apple would prefer to settle IP disputes where it can. ?I?ve always hated litigation and I continue to hate it,? Cook told analysts in April. ?We just want people to invent their own stuff. So if we could get to some arrangement where we could be assured that?s the case and a fair settlement on the stuff that?s occurred, I would highly prefer to settle than to battle.?
  • The patents Google acquired through its $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility hasn?t exactly proven a formidable weapon in the smartphone patent wars. Indeed, the patent portfolio Motorola first brought to bear in many of its cases against Apple has largely been winnowed down to standards-essential patents the company is obligated to license on FRAND (fair, reasonable and nondiscriminatory) terms. And the fact that Google is using them as a weapon in these battles at all is drawing a lot of unwanted regulatory scrutiny ahead of the company?s imminent showdown with the FTC.
  • Now on to the specifics ?

  • Sources say those ?secret? settlement talks between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Larry Page earlier this year went reasonably well, setting the stage for the sort of tentative stand down that?s now been proposed.
  • Indeed, Apple actually made a settlement offer to Google earlier this year, sources say, but nothing came of it.
  • Despite that, high-level background discussions between the two companies continued.
  • Then, in October, Google abruptly withdrew a complaint it had brought against Apple with the International Trade Commission, not a month after the ITC agreed to review it.
  • Sources say that withdrawal, which was never explained, was not a coincidence. Could it have been a good will gesture? Possibly. Certainly, it?s a clear de-escalation. As best I can tell, however, Apple has not responded in kind.

So what now?

That?s not at all clear. Though Google and Apple are talking arbitration, they are far from agreeing on the terms of an arbitration proceeding ? let alone a reasonable royalty base. It?s entirely possible they never make it to arbitration.

But at least they?re talking about it.

Apple and Google both declined to comment on their negotiations.

Money 101 For Parents, Teens And Kids | BlogPad - Digital World

Parents face numerous dilemmas about their kids and their kids' money: how much allowance to pay, when to open their bank accounts, how to teach the value of a dollar/rupee. Opinions and approaches may vary, but saving for a rainy day is always smart, money management for teenagers is basically the same as for adults. Here's why.

Save for a rainy day

A healthy personal finance plan starts with an action many of us struggle with: saving. From the time your kids are old enough to express their own desires, try to teach them how to save for items big or small.

Demonstrate your work

From early on, your child should understand that money isn't something to receive for free but something to earn by working hard for it.

Understand budgets

Children should understand that Mom and Dad have limited funds to use each month. By learning about budgets - what they are. how they work, and why they're important - kids start employing these ideas with their own money.

Compound interest or invest

Saving money every day is great - but you can earn even more through compound interest. Talk with your kids about how money earns interest over time and helps an account grow faster. For Muslims children there are pure Islamic bank exists that work without any kind of interest or use online/offline trade investing and profit sharing companies.

Be careful with credit

Credit cards are great tools for a healthy financial lifestyle - but, of course, they're not free money. Teens need to know that from the start, and that to use a credit card, they need to plan carefully. Or parents should apply or tell their kids about their monthly limit.

See below infographic to know where teens stash their cash, who spend the most and where does it all go and some tips?

Computer programs like Hudl revolutionize prep football

By SCOTT PURKS AND | The Tampa Tribune

Robinson High football coach Mike DePue remembers one Saturday morning when he awoke at the crack of dawn after a few hours of sleep, drove miles to a desolate parking lot to exchange VCR tapes of the previous night's game with another coach, and then drove back to Robinson.

When DePue arrived at Robinson, he inserted the tape into the machine and ?

The Three Stooges appeared.

Yes, there were plays of his next opponent, but in between there were scenes of Curly bopping Moe on the head.

"You know how it was," DePue said. "Sometimes you'd tape over things with those VCR tapes and other things that someone had taped would still pop up."

Ancient history.

Thanks to computer software programs such as Hudl, which DePue and Robinson used for the first time this year, there are no more drives across the state to exchange tape. DePue would have done that Saturday because the Knights are playing tonight against Port Orange Atlantic, which is near Daytona.

"Now we just go online," DePue said, "because Atlantic also uses Hudl."

So do many, many others.

In a nutshell, Hudl works by exporting a team's digitized game films to an online database in Nebraska, where anyone across the country ? players, coaches, family members ? can access the files with the username and password.

Besides the obvious upside of no longer having to exchange tape in person, a Hudl program offers chances for coaches ? from anywhere at any time ? to break down games play by play and make comments and notes of criticisms about players and/or plays. The notes can be written or voice recorded. There are even telestration tools coaches can use to show blocking assignments or a running back where they need to go.

Players and coaches, meantime, can study film when they want on their computers, tablets or smartphones.

"(Hudl) has saved us many, many hours of sleep," said Plant coach Bo Puckett, who heads up the Panthers' "Hudl initiative."

"It has made things so much easier."

Plant coach Robert Weiner discovered the program three years ago when Hudl's creators talked at a coaches' clinic in Oregon.

"At first, I thought it was some kind of a gimmick, but after I listened to it I said, 'This is the future,' " Weiner said. "This is going to change everything."

Another of the things Weiner and Puckett like best about the program occurs in December, a time they used to spend compiling highlight reels, burning dozens of DVDs, stuffing them in envelopes and mailing them to college recruiters. Now highlight reels on each player can be created, saved and viewed by anyone through Hudl with the swipe of a keystroke.

"My Christmas vacations were never vacations because I would spend the whole break doing highlight films," Puckett said. "Now I actually get a Christmas vacation."

The cost for Hudl program packages ranges from $29 a month to $3,000 a year, depending on how deep you want to interact with the program.

"It's money very well spent," DePue said. "We've saved a lot of time and energy using this program. It's been a boon."

But there is one thing online game films cannot solve: Poor camera work.

As DePue said: "We are still at the mercy of the cameraman."

Virtusize searches for the perfect online fit - PandoDaily

There?s a slight snag with shopping online for clothes?? you?re never quite sure if they?re going to fit. Companies have been trying everything from 3D models to augmented reality to solve the problem, but Stockholm startup Virtusize thinks it has a better way.

Virtusize asks shoppers to compare the size of a garment they want to buy with a garment they already own. By punching in that garment?s measurements into Virtusize?s Web app, which is hosted on partner shopping sites, shoppers get a visual representation of how well the desired item will fit. Virtusize?s logic is that a tape measure on an item of clothing is a more accurate representation of how well something will fit than measuring body shape.

Alternatively, shoppers can indicate to Virtusize that they already own a particular garment from a certain store and of a certain size, so the app can use that as a point of reference. Virtusize overlays the size of the shopper?s currently owned garment on top of the desired item, all in a very snazzy interactive graphic.

The 18-month-old company has partnered with 20 shopping sites in Scandinavia, Austria, Germany, and the UK, but they?ve also started talks in the US, which they say is a major target. Its ambition is to be the global standard for size and fit on fashion ecommerce sites and platforms.

Peder Stuber, one of the 10-person company?s five co-founders, said today that Virtusize is focusing squarely on the size and fit of clothing, not design. Clothing sizes vary dramatically across markets and between brands, he noted, and there is no universal standard. The company?s CEO, Gustaf Tunhammar, came up for the idea for Virtusize after being frustrated by having to frequently returns T-shirts he bought online that didn?t fit.

Clothing returns are costly for retailers. Not only are there the inherent postage and handling costs, but often the returned items have to go straight onto the discount rack, because they go out of season.

Technology companies have been trying to solve the online fitting conundrum in many ways, including with full-body scanners, digital avatars, and robotics. One of Virtusize?s major competitors is Boston?s True Fit, which uses data-driven algorithms to calculate a customer?s size and shape, according to the Wall Street Journal. It recommends a size for each garment and describes how it fits around the bust and hips. Because True Fit is secretive about how it does its calculations, it is difficult to assess how successful and scalable its method will prove to be. Other competitors include Clothes Horse and Fits.me.

Stuber believes Virtusize?s approach is very scaleable. It relies on getting measurement information for each garment from retailers or brands, which is then fed into Virtusize?s system. Each garment is then visually outlined within the app whenever a shopper clicks on the Virtusize button within a product page. The 2D approach is also preferable to 3D models, Stuber argued, because 3D can sometimes hide how tight or loose a piece of clothing might hang on the body.

Virtusize raised an undisclosed seed round from Swedish investment firm ?resund and angel investors, including a former eBay executive. Its biggest partnership is with Nelly.com, a leading online retailer in Sweden.

Occupy debt-relief campaign buys $100,000 worth of debt | The Raw ...

By Arturo Garcia
Thursday, November 15, 2012 11:58 EST

?

Members of a debt relief project borne from the Occupy Wall Street campaign said Wednesday they have purchased more than $100,000 worth of medical debt in a second trial run for their efforts.

Thomas Gokey, a spokesperson for the Rolling Jubilee campaign, said the debt was purchased for $5,000. Earlier this year, the group bought $14,000 worth of debt for $500.

?We are buying debt that is being sold on the secondary market for pennies on the dollar,? Gokey said in a conference call. ?We are doing it in exactly the same way that [debt collectors] do it, with one big difference: we are abolishing the debt as we buy it.?

Normally, he said, such businesses acquire debt on the cheap and then hound debtors for the full amount.

?This debt is immoral, but the immorality of it comes down on the side of the lenders, not on the side of the debtors,? Gokey said. ?We?re being told that we have a moral obligation to pay these debts, and Strike Debt?s main message is that many of these debts are illegitimate, and that we should form a way of resistance and refusal to these debts.?

A fundraising concert is scheduled to be held Thursday in New York City, with the group seeking to raise $50,000 in order to buy ? and wipe out ? $1 million worth of medical debt.

Gokey said the group behind the project, Strike Debt, had bought its own 501 c(4) to manage the funds it manages to raise, and that his group was working with unspecified ?business insiders,? lawyers and accountants. While the campaign is not targeting individual debtors in its purchases, people who are part of the buys will be notified soon that their obligations have been discharged.

However, he said, the group could not name their allies, nor whom Strike Debt bought the debts from, in order to protect itself from being ?blacklisted? by financial institutions, and there is no mechanism in place for publicly verifying the organization?s purchases.

?We hope to be able to verify our debt buys very soon,? Strike Debt member Ann Larson said in an email to The Raw Story Wednesday afternoon. ?There are legal and privacy issues to work out. We have been much more successful than we had imagined, so things are taking a bit longer than we expected. But we are committed to transparency and to making everything public once we have the go-ahead from our legal team.?

Gokey said another commonly-cited source of debt, student loans, poses a different challenge.

?There?s incredible protections that the government put into place for lenders who lend to students,? he said. ?We?re looking into what might be possible with student debt. We can?t say for sure at this time, but I think we?re all very eager to do something with student debt, if it?s possible.?

Strike Debt?s video explaining the Rolling Jubilee campaign, posted on YouTube last week, can be seen below.

Where Have All The Metrosexuals Gone? | Psych Central News

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on November 14, 2012

Where Have All The Metrosexuals Gone?A new sociological study reviews how men think of the term ?metrosexual? and if the label has run its course.

Dr. Erynn Masi de Casanova, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Cincinnati, says the label was originally coined by British journalist Mark Simpson to describe a single, young (usually heterosexual) man with a high disposable income, who worked in the city.

Casanova?s research, based on interviews with men in three major metropolitan cities, found that men in general were taking more interest in a well-groomed appearance and that they felt the term, ?metrosexual,? was a stereotype that had run its course.

Some men who were interviewed indicated that they preferred dressing up and looking sharp ? especially on weekends ? even though many American businesses now promote workplace casual dress codes. This was prominently reported in New York City.

Casanova interviewed 22 men in which the word ?metrosexual? came up in the conversation. The men were white-collar workers in three major U.S. cities: New York, San Francisco and Cincinnati.

?I was really interested in finding out how individual men think about social categories, such as metrosexual,? Casanova said. ?It?s a word that?s out there, but do men really think about it ? does it mean anything to them??

It turns out that the term has an ambiguous connotation.

?I found out that people had contradictory opinions about what being metrosexual was. Sometimes one person would reveal both negative and positive connotations about the word,? said Casanova.

She said the majority of the men referred to the aesthetic aspect of the stereotype ? men who were well-dressed and well-groomed.

The men also said that the term was being used less and less ? that it was likely a buzz-word that was fizzling out, or that now it has just become a label as more men pay more attention to their appearance.

?One of the interviewees said it?s just a new word for who used to be called a ?pretty boy,?? Casanova says.

Casanova?s interviews discovered that the metrosexual moniker appeared to be a vehicle for heterosexual men to enjoy fashion without being stereotyped as gay ? although others considered the term a more polite way of calling someone gay.

Some men, Casanova said, saw the interest in fashion as a possible way to bridge gaps between gay and straight men. Some of the heterosexual men interviewed admitted taking fashion advice from gay men.

?As many men confirmed, this bridge seems to be a relatively new ? and still somewhat tenuous ? development,? Casanova says.

Although the sample size was small, the study participants represented a variety of ethnic, social demographic and vocational pursuits.

Of the 22 men interviewed, half were from New York, 41 percent were from Cincinnati and nine percent were from San Francisco. The majority of the interviewees identified as white; three identified as African-American; one as Indian and one as ?Afro-Caribbean.?

The men held a variety of positions in the corporate world, from sales/marketing to finance, recruitment and architecture/design. The average age of the men interviewed was 36. The youngest was 24 and the oldest was 58.

Casanova says the research is part of a larger study that will investigate anthropological trends within U.S. society.

Celebrating Canterbury Volunteers | Keep Sport Alive In Canterbury

2012 Sport New Zealand Volunteer Awards

The regional winners of the 2012 Sport New Zealand Volunteer of the Year Awards have been announced.

Sport New Zealand?s annual Award programme in partnership with Rebel Sport recognises outstanding volunteers in each region ? in the categories of Coach, Administrator and Lifetime Achievement.

Sport Canterbury presented each recipient with a certificate and sports book, recognising them at the recent Sports Executive Breakfast in Christchurch.

The judges had an unenviable task, selecting winners from nearly 200 nominations.

2012 Sport New Zealand Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award ? Canterbury West Coast Region

Neil Gow

Neil Gow

Neil has held many roles with the Elmwood Bowling Club, including five years on the Executive Committee (two years as President) and six years as Green Superintendent (a position he still holds). He runs the winter indoor bowls and mentors new players. He was on the working party committee to form the Elmwood Club (a sporting hub encompassing six sports) and is now the Elmwood Bowling Club Board Member on that Elmwood Club.

?

In over 20 years as a member of Elmwood Bowling Club, Neil has selflessly dedicated hundreds of hours of his own time for the betterment of the club. With the positions he holds or has held, he is at the club every day in Summer and every second day in winter. He is known as the first to come forward for working bees, cooking on the barbecue and whatever needs to be done. He was an integral worker in local sport recovery following the Canterbury earthquakes.

Prior to taking up bowls, Neil was involved with the Lincoln University Rugby Club for over 20 years as administrator and coach, also serving over 18 years on the Canterbury Rugby Football Union Executive.

With a tremendous commitment of over 40 years to sport volunteering, there seem to be only three to four weeks each year when Neil is not fully committed to volunteering duties. Those who know him comment that more remarkably, he is ?always smiling!?

2012 Sport New Zealand Volunteer Coach of the Year ? Canterbury West Coast Region

Glenn Hooper

Glenn Hooper

Glenn has coached in both summer and winter sport for Catholic Cathedral College for the last 10 years. He is always willing to go the extra mile required to help out in other areas of sport at the school as well.

In 2012, he has Coached a Year 7 cricket team, a Year 9 cricket team and a senior cricket team (and we all know how much time cricket involves!). In the winter he coaches a girls? rugby team and a 2nd 11 club team.

Glenn is therefore responsible for five teams in total ? which means 12-14 hours weekly training plus three to four additional hours each Saturday.

Glenn is extremely committed almost every week throughout the year ? summer and winter alike. He is always willing to assist with more teams whenever another coach or parents put their hand up for help.

Glenn?s athletes say they really enjoy his coaching ? both the fun and the opportunity to learn from someone with so much experience.

2012 Sport New Zealand Volunteer Administrator of the Year ? Canterbury West Coast Region

Paula Wilkinson

Paula Wilkinson

Paula has built Pioneer Basketball Club from the very beginning. She has dedicated 12 years to the club and 25 years to Canterbury basketball, where she supported hundreds of children through skill clinics and trials.

She has worked as a volunteer, building the junior club to nearly 100 teams. She works all draws for these teams, contacting all schools and coaches, and putting in countless hours. The club is trying to employ an administrator, and Paula is working to get funds for this position.

Paula referees and coaches, as well as spending hours in front of the computer each week and for the entire season.

In 2012, Paula has Pioneer Club teams in both male and female leagues in Christchurch Club basketball ? for the first time ever!

She works tirelessly to secure grants for not only the club, but for individuals who are nominated to attend tournaments, some of which are overseas. Put simply, without Paula, there would not be a Pioneer Basketball Club.

As always, Paula thinks of others before herself, which is why Pioneer is growing from strength to strength

In relation to home cleanliness then the selection of right home cleaner is extremely critical as the germs are killed provided that we use robust and effective cleaners. Despite the fact that there are a large number of home cleaners readily available in the market but the majority of them are unsafe for our household and pets as pets and kids usually crawl within the flooring, which suggests their hands, are in immediate contact with the surface of ground. My own experience and professionals viewpoints say that you simply must use natural floor cleaner because they are ideal in almost everything. They not just cleanse flooring effectively but what makes them exclusive from regular cleaners is the fact that they are environmentally safe, because they don?t contain harmful chemicals in them. I am pretty distinct regarding the scent of home cleaners and I like organic cleaners on account of their scent, as they do not have strong teasing odor.

Now days, you are able to also cleanse your solid wood things specially your furnishings, doorways and cupboards by simply making use of natural wood cleaner on them. These kinds of cleaners not merely remove dirt from your surface of furnishings but additionally make them shiny similar to new one. This is not all, you could also try natural nursery cleaner. This is specifically employed for cleaning toys, cribs, diaper pails, bed mattresses and so forth.

Paul Ryan Speaks Out After Loss

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., spoke out for the first time following the Republican presidential ticket?s loss last Tuesday in an interview with his local Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper, saying he was shocked on Election Night.

Recognizing that President Obama ?won fair and square,? he described the scene watching the returns come in with the Romneys in a Boston hotel, calling it ?pretty sad.?

?We were with the Romneys when we knew it was over,? he said in the interview. ?Our comments more or less revolved around our concern for the country.?

Ryan did win one election on Tuesday: his House race. Though, he won it by his smallest margin yet, 11.5 percentage points. Overall, however, he called the experience of running for vice president positive and said the Romneys treated him ?like family members.?

?I know some people have come away with different conclusions on these experiences,? he said. ?This is a very net positive experience for us.?

Although giving the president credit for bringing out the votes needed to win, Ryan would not admit that his loss was a failure of policy.

?Well, he got turnout,? Ryan said. ?The president should get credit for achieving record-breaking turnout numbers from urban areas for the most part, and that did win the election for him.?

Continuing, he said: ?It?s clear we have a country that is divided among a number of issues. We thought that the best thing for the country is to get ahead of our fiscal problems. We offered specific solutions. It didn't go our way. So obviously we're disappointed by that. We're not going to be able to fix this country's fiscal problems along the way I thought we should have. Whether people intended it or not, we've got divided government.?

Ryan said that the divided government of the last two years did not work and that the two parties are going to have to work together better to solve problems, specifically the national debt.

?I guess the shock that we felt that evening, a shock to where the country is headed,? he said.

He declined to answer questions about his potential involvement in the presidential contest in 2016, saying the country was a tired of politics after the election.

NBC's Bell leaves "Today," takes bigger Olympics role

(Reuters) - Longtime "Today" show executive producer Jim Bell will be leaving the NBC morning show to become a full-time executive producer of the Olympics, the TV network said on Tuesday.

The reshuffling is part of Comcast NBC efforts to revive the "Today" show, which has been in a back-and-forth ratings war with rival ABC's "Good Morning America" ever since ABC snapped NBC's 16-year unbeaten streak earlier in the year.

A source told Reuters on Monday that NBC expects to name Alexandra Wallace, a senior vice president of the network's news division, to Bell's old "Today" post, along with another producer.

Bell, who has headed the show since 2005, was blamed this year for the controversial firing of Ann Curry as anchor alongside Matt Lauer.

Reuters had previously reported in August that Bell was in line for a kind of uber-producing sports role like the one Dick Ebersol - NBC's longtime Olympics executive producer and former sports chief who served as a mentor to Bell - played for the network.

"There is no doubt that Jim is the right person to be our Olympic production leader into the future," said Mark Lazarus, head of NBC sports.

Bell will report to Lazarus, NBC said.

NBC has a contract to broadcast the Olympics in the United States for the next four games in Russia, Brazil, South Korea and an unnamed host city in 2020.

London marked the first time Bell was in charge of coverage of the games, filling the shoes of Ebersol, who left NBC in May 2011. Despite flak from social media sites for having delayed airing major events until prime time, NBC's London Olympics coverage drew a record number of viewers.

Bell, 45, a former defensive lineman on Harvard's football team, joined NBC in 1990 to work on the Barcelona Olympics and has worked on every summer Olympics since. He has also produced broadcasts of football, basketball and baseball games for NBC.

Android-powered Vuzix M100 aims to take on Google Glass

Android Central

Vuzix has announced the latest in their line of video-enabled eyewear, and it's going to be competing pretty directly with Google Glass. The M100 will run a tailored version of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, will pair up with devices over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi to support augmented reality (among other) apps, and project a WQVGA display to the eye, which works out to (about 432 x 240).

The front camera will shoot video at 720p, saved to the 4 GB of internal flash memory. The whole package will be powered by a 1 GHz processor. Battery life leaves a little something to be desired; you'll be able to get 8 hours on it if you're just doing classic hands-free stuff, but with that, the camera, and the display activated, Vuzix is expecting an hour of usage. Launch is expected to be early next year, but how much will it cost? Well, the developer kit which will include a production M100 when it's available is going for $999, so that should give you a rough idea.

Is there any room for another augmented eyewear player with Google involved? Vuzix has been doing this sort of thing for longer, but Google has the ecosystem and developer support. Either way, will these kind of accessories actually get people to start using augmented reality apps regularly? How much can we reasonably expect people to pay for digital eyewear? More info on the Vuzix M100 can be found at their product page

LIPA restoration nearly done; no power for 84,000 in New York /New Jersey

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Long Island Power Authority expects to restore service on Tuesday to most of its New York customers able to receive electricity, but more than 84,000 homes and businesses in New York and New Jersey will stay dark due to flood damage from Hurricane Sandy.

LIPA, a New York State-owned power company, said it should hook up almost all of the remaining 15,000 homes and businesses that still lack service on Tuesday morning, more than two weeks after Sandy battered the region.

But that number excludes customers within the flooded areas of Long Island that have yet to be surveyed for damage or may need repairs and certification by an electrician before the company can restore service, LIPA said.

On Monday night, LIPA said about 38,000 homes and businesses were located within the flooded areas - 26,000 on the Rockaway Peninsula in New York City, 11,000 in Nassau County and 300 in Suffolk County.

Other New York and New Jersey utilities had restored power by the weekend to most customers able to take service.

However, thousands of customers remained without power due to flood damage - especially from seawater - which may have damaged electrical panels, wires, outlets and appliances, making it unsafe to restore electricity.

In New York City, Consolidated Edison Inc said on Monday it still had about 16,300 customers in flood-ravaged areas of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island who could not regain electric service until they fixed their internal equipment.

In New Jersey, FirstEnergy Corp's Jersey Central Power and Light utility has said about 30,000 customers on the barrier islands and shoreline communities could not have power restored due to infrastructure damage in that area.

LIPA HIT HARDEST

Sandy knocked out power to about 8.5 million customers in 21 states after hitting New Jersey on October 29.

More than 1 million of LIPA's 1.1 million customers lost power due to Sandy, while a nor'easter storm last week knocked out 123,000 more customers - thousands of whom had had power restored after Sandy.

Combined, Sandy and the nor'easter knocked out more homes and businesses on Long Island than LIPA has customers.

Despite the hard hit, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has attacked all of the affected New York power companies - especially LIPA - for the slow pace of restoration.

Fitch Ratings, a credit rating firm, on Monday revised its outlook on LIPA's $5.9 billion of outstanding electric system revenue bonds to negative.

Fitch said the effects of Sandy would challenge LIPA's already tight financial flexibility and frustrate the authority's efforts to achieve improved financial performance.

The cost of the Sandy restoration was uncertain but would likely exceed the $170 million LIPA spent to restore service after Hurricane Irene in August 2011, Fitch said.

LIPA expects to recover about 75 percent of its Sandy-related restoration costs from the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, Fitch said.

Ratepayers usually cover unreimbursed storm costs. However, Fitch said LIPA's willingness to make customers pay more may be limited "given the intense political pressure surrounding LIPA's storm response and the authority's historic objective to moderate already high electric rates".

LED Lightbulb Replacements Hit Stores Empty Of 100-Watt Bulbs

NEW YORK -- Sorry to see 100-watt bulbs disappear from stores because they were energy hogs? You can now get LED bulbs that roughly match the 100-watters for size and brightness, but use far less energy.

Until recently, your only alternative was a compact fluorescent bulb, which has several drawbacks compared with light-emitting diodes. Most people see the light quality as less pleasing, and the bulbs contain a small amount of mercury that's released if the glass breaks. LEDs, by contrast, don't contain any volatile, hazardous substances and are durable. They also last longer.

Osram Sylvania, a division of Germany's Siemens AG, said Monday that it's shipping the first batches of its Ultra LED bulb to some Lowe's stores. The bulb uses 20 watts of electricity and costs $50. It's slightly larger than a regular 100-watt bulb, so it may not fit in all fixtures. Osram claims 25,000 hours of use, or more than 20 times the lifespan of a standard, incandescent bulb.

Competitors aren't far behind. Royal Philips Electronics NV plans to start selling its own, slightly brighter 100-watt-equivalent LED bulb at Home Depot's website starting in a few weeks for about $55. Startup Switch Lighting Bulb Co., with its unusual liquid-filled bulbs, plans to start selling 100-watt equivalents late this year or in January.

The federal government banned the manufacture of regular 100-watt bulbs on Jan. 1 as a consequence of new energy-efficiency standards. Much the way it forces car manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency, the government is forcing the lighting industry to move away from incandescent bulbs because they convert relatively little of the electrical input into light. Most of the energy is dissipated as heat. In the next step, 75-watt bulbs will be banned at the start of next year, and 60-watt and 40-watt bulbs at the start of 2014.

Compact fluorescent bulbs that produce light equivalent to 100-watt bulbs have been available for a few years and cost as little as $4 each.

LEDs are small chips that produce light when current passes through them. In their red and green incarnations, they've been around for decades. Technical breakthroughs in the 90s allowed the manufacture of chips that produce white light.

LED bulbs equivalent to 60-watt bulbs have been available for a few years and now cost around $25 each. The problem with making brighter models is that while LEDs produce less heat than regular bulbs, the heat they do create shortens the lifespan and reduces the efficiency of the chips. Cramming a dozen chips together in a tight bulb-shaped package that fits in today's lamps and sockets makes the heat problem worse, and the brighter the bulb, the more heat is produced. LED bulbs have large, finned metal collars to radiate the heat.

BBC under pressure to restore trust after scandal

(AP) ? The bungling of reports that powerful Britons sexually abused children has thrown one of the largest and most respected broadcasters in the world into a deep crisis.

It is hard to overstate the importance of the BBC in British society; its influence stretches throughout the former British empire and beyond. Over the years, the BBC has been behind almost all of the U.K.'s broadcast milestones, serving as a voice for the British nation. Its airwaves have carried the clanging of Big Ben's bells, wartime messages from Winston Churchill, and the music of the Beatles ? exporting British culture to a global audience.

The head of the BBC's governing body called Sunday for an overhaul of the broadcaster. That could mean many things for the sprawling organization that has long emphasized its obligations to the public. To know what it would take, it is important to know what the BBC is and the scale of the crisis it faces.

WHAT HAPPENED:

Last month, the BBC drew fire after it emerged its "Newsnight" program had shelved an investigation into child sexual abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile, the broadcaster's renowned TV host who died last year.

Police say that since their investigation started they have received complaints from some 300 victims of the platinum-haired, tracksuit-wearing Savile and associates ? and that some of the abuse may have occurred on BBC premises. Questions soon arose over whether shelving the "Newsnight" piece was part of a cover-up or if BBC managers had heard of but ignored claims of abuse by Savile while he was hosting such shows as "Top of the Pops."

Amid public outrage, BBC director general George Entwistle announced internal inquiries into why the "Newsnight" investigation was canned as well as the BBC's "culture and practices" during the years Savile worked there.

But then, "Newsnight" wrongly implicated a British politician in a sex-abuse claims program that aired Nov. 2.

The BBC didn't name the alleged abuser, but online rumors focused on Alistair McAlpine, a Conservative Party member. On Friday, McAlpine issued a fierce denial, and shortly after, the abuse victim interviewed by "Newsnight" admitted he had mistakenly identified his abuser.

The BBC apologized for airing the program, which Entwistle said he had not been made aware of. That stance drew incredulity from politicians and media watchers wondering if he was out of touch or inept. The criticism reached fever pitch, and Entwistle decided to resign Saturday. A day later, Chris Patten, the head of the BBC's governing body, called for a "thorough, radical structural overhaul" of the broadcaster.

THE BBC'S EVOLUTION

Some observers say the BBC's massive size and rapid growth have resulted in a decentralized structure without clear lines of responsibility, leaving the door open for shoddy journalism. But while today the BBC is a global brand, it started out with a simple mission in November 1922: to inform, educate and entertain.

It took on a crucial role in public life with the onset of World War II, when the service brought Churchill's famous speeches to the airwaves. The BBC expanded its overseas language services, and its radio programs became a lifeline of information ? including even for Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's own command, according to the broadcaster.

Television took on a greater role within the organization after the war, hitting a milestone when 20 million viewers tuned in for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953. The BBC expanded its offerings, launching current affairs program "Panorama" ? still a hit today ? and the first British soap opera.

The media behemoth's solid news foundation showed in the 1980s with its coverage of the Falklands War, the first Live Aid concert and the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Diana, which drew one of the largest TV audiences ever.

In more recent years, the BBC has greatly expanded its digital broadcasting and Internet services.

HOW BIG IS IT?

Today, the organization says it reaches a weekly audience of 166 million people globally over multiple platforms, including radio, digital satellite and cable channels.

The BBC boasts 10 national TV channels in addition to regional U.K. programming, 10 national radio stations, 40 local radio stations and a website which averages 3.6 billion hits a month.

The BBC World Service broadcasts globally on radio, TV and online, providing news and information in almost 30 languages. The broader organization, meanwhile, cranks out TV gold such as science fiction series "Doctor Who" and long-running soap "EastEnders."

Its commercial arm, BBC World News, broadcasts 24 hours a day in more than 200 countries and territories.

HOW DOES IT DO IT ? AND AT WHAT COST?

Most of the BBC's services in the U.K. are funded by a tax on households that have televisions or watch TV on computers or other devices, while profits from commercial ventures such as BBC Worldwide and BBC World News are used to invest in new programming and services.

Still, rival broadcasters in the past have complained that the BBC has used public money to fund types of programs supplied by commercial operators, ditching its public service mission in a quest for viewers.

Under pressure from critics to justify its 3.5 billion pound ($5.6 billion) budget in a time of austerity, the BBC in recent years has undergone a series of job cuts, cuts to operations and unpopular changes to employee pension programs.

Most of those changes were ushered in by Mark Thompson, who preceded Entwistle as BBC director general. Thompson is to assume the role of chief executive of The New York Times Co. on Monday, but faces questions over the BBC's decision to kill the "Newsnight" program on Savile ? which occurred while he was still in charge.

PAST BBC CHALLENGES

The BBC has repeatedly faced off against the government over editorial independence.

Its first major confrontation was during the 1926 general strike, when Churchill unsuccessfully lobbied the prime minister to commandeer the airwaves because the strike limited the modes of communication between the government and the public.

The BBC later came under pressure to support a campaign in the Falklands in 1982, enraging the Margaret Thatcher government by casting doubt on official sources. The BBC's director general at the time insisted it needed to "guard its reputation for telling the truth."

In 2003, a BBC reporter suggested that then-Prime Minister Tony Blair had misled parliament with claims that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. The government called for an apology, but the BBC refused. The BBC's source, weapons expert David Kelly, was named in the media and had to explain himself repeatedly. He later killed himself.

The inquiry into Kelly's death said the reporter had made "unfounded allegations" and called the broadcaster's editorial processes defective. The inquiry's findings led to the resignations of the BBC's chairman Gavyn Davies and its director-general, Greg Dyke ? and the installation of Thompson as successor.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The broadcaster's charter sets out that "trust is at the foundation of the BBC: we are independent, impartial and honest." But public trust in the BBC has been declining for decades, according to polls, and the latest scandals are unlikely to help.

Entwistle may have quit, but observers say the BBC Trust, which ensures the broadcaster stays true to its public obligations, deserves scrutiny, too. Patten is expected on Monday to lay out plans for how to deal with the aftermath, and many expect more BBC resignations as the fallout spreads.

Kevin Marsh, a former senior BBC editor, says the broadcaster needs to get better at explaining itself and admitting its errors. Even if it never fully recovers, the BBC can probably "learn to live with" a new reality of weaker public confidence, he added.

Tim Davies, a former PepsiCo executive with a marketing background and no experience as a journalist, has been named acting director general. While BBC insiders might regard Davies with suspicion, "He doesn't have BBC blood flowing through his veins, and quite honestly at the moment that could be an advantage," Marsh said.
