Cybercrime disclosures rare despite new SEC rule

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Hackers broke into computers at hotel giant Wyndham Worldwide Corp. three times in two years and stole credit card information belonging to hundreds of thousands of customers. Wyndham didn't report the break-in in corporate filings even though the Securities and Exchange Commission wants companies to inform investors of cybercrimes.

Amid whispers of sensational online break-ins resulting in millions of dollars in losses, it remains remarkably difficult to identify corporate victims of cybercrimes. Companies are afraid that going public would damage their reputations, sink stock prices or spark lawsuits.

The chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., is adding a provision to cybersecurity legislation that would strengthen the reporting requirement. The SEC's guidance issued in October is not mandatory. It was intended to update for the digital age a requirement that companies report "material risks" that investors want to know.

Rockefeller's measure would direct the SEC's five commissioners to make clear when companies must disclose cyber breaches and spell out steps they are taking to protect their computer networks from electronic intrusions.

The SEC recently challenged Internet retailer Amazon's decision to omit from its 2011 annual report references to the online theft of customer data held by Zappos, an online shoe company owned by Amazon. Amazon eventually agreed to modify the statement slightly, according to correspondence between the company and the SEC. But the company still argued that the Zappos attack was not covered by the commission's cybersecurity guidance because it had no material impact on Amazon's business.

Cybercrime is rampant and not confined to the United States. The head of Britain's domestic spy agency said this week that cybersecurity ranks alongside terrorism as one of the United Kingdom's most pressing security challenges. In one recent case, an unspecified, London-listed company hit by a cyberattack incurred revenue losses of $1.2 billion, MI5 Director General Jonathan Evans said in rare public remarks in London. He did not identify the company or say which country was behind the attack. The U.S. has said China and Russia are the governments most frequently engaged in such hacking.

"What is at stake is not just our government secrets but also the safety and security of our infrastructure, the intellectual property that underpins our future prosperity, and the commercially sensitive information that is the lifeblood of our companies and corporations," Evans said.

Research by a cybersecurity expert shows dozens of Fortune 500 companies have lost a wide range of valuable information to cybercrimes, including intellectual property, bank account credentials, restricted data about patients of pharmaceutical companies and internal legal records.

Rodney Joffe of Neustar, an Internet infrastructure management company in Virginia, monitors networks used by online criminal groups and traces the origin of stolen information. He found evidence that 162 out 168 companies in the manufacturing, chemical and transportation sectors had been compromised. The names of the companies are being kept confidential for proprietary reasons, he said.

"No one is safe. Everyone is compromised," said Joffe, Neustar's senior technologist. "When people tell you, 'We are protected as a company,' they are really fooling themselves."

The SEC isn't tracking how many companies comply with its cybersecurity guidance. But publicly traded companies historically have resisted supplying information about cyber incidents because it highlights their weak spots, said Peter Toren, a former federal prosecutor with the Justice Department's computer crime division.

"It just doesn't look good," Toren said.

The breach of Wyndham's computers was described in a Federal Trade Commission lawsuit filed this week against the company and three subsidiaries for alleged security failures that led to the three data breaches between April 2008 and January 2010. The failures caused "the export of hundreds of thousands of consumers' payment card account information to an Internet domain address registered in Russia" and millions of dollars in fraudulent charges on consumers' accounts, the FTC said.

Wyndham didn't mention the break-ins in its 2011 annual report or prior securities filings, according to an Associated Press review of the records.

Wyndham's 2011 annual report said the "hospitality industry is under increasing attack by cyber-criminals in the U.S. and other jurisdictions in which we operate" and noted that it was involved in "claims relating to information security and data privacy." Wyndham spent $13 million more on security improvements and expects to spend as much as $100 million in 2012 to guard against "the increasingly aggressive global threat from cyber-criminals," according to the report.

Wyndham said in an emailed statement to The Associated Press that it "fully complied with SEC regulations in regards to the disclosure of material events." In the statement, Wyndham said the incidents were "previously reported," an apparent reference to notices to consumers that were published on the company's website. The company also said the FTC's claims were without merit.

Network infrastructure company Verisign reported in late October, just a few weeks after the SEC issued the guidance, that there had been several successful cyberattacks against its corporate networks in 2010. In the filing, Verisign said the company's management had not been informed of the attacks until September 2011.

LinkedIn, the online networking service, publicly announced on June 12 the online theft of 6.5 million user passwords. It said the announcement complies with its obligations to the SEC, but it has yet to file a report about the incident with the commission.

The new SEC guidance puts pressure on companies to decide whether to disclose a breach or keep it secret, said Jody Westby of Global Cyber Risk, a consulting firm. But she said the demand for information amounts to locking the door after the house has been robbed.

"The SEC would have done better to require all public companies to say whether they've taken actions to implement a security program," Westby said.

Bayern Munich to make pre-season trip to China

Guangzhou (China), June 30 : German football club Bayern Munich will make a pre-season trip to China in July and play two games in the country.

The club said in a statement on their website Friday that they will visit China July 22-27, with a match against a yet to be determined opponent set for July 24 in Beijing and another game against Bundesliga rivals VfL Wolfsburg July 26 in Guangzhou, reported Xinhua.

It will be Bayern's third trip to China, following games in 2000 and 2007.

Bayern official Andreas Jung said that the team will include eight German players led by captain Philipp Lahm who reached the semi-finals at Euro 2012.

"We are delighted that we have the chance to present ourselves to our numerous fans in China," Jung told a news conference in Guangzhou.

The Bundesliga season starts in late August with Bayern's first game against newly promoted Greuther Fuerth.

Could Instagram And Other Sites Avoid Going Down With Amazon?s Ship?

ship stormWhen we heard about?Instagram (and other sites) going down?when Amazon Web Services' North Virginia hub was hit by a storm -- not the first time AWS has gone down (April 2011 was another notable outage) we couldn't help but wonder: could ?it have been avoided? Mike Krieger, one of the founders of Instagram, once presented a?great slideshow?describing how Instagram was able to scale up so well. "The cleanest solution with the fewest moving parts as possible," has been one of the guiding principles for the photo-sharing app,?bought by Facebook?in a billion-dollar deal earlier this year. Iran focus of Russian president's visit to Israel

JERUSALEM?Israel urged the visiting Russian president on Monday to step up pressure on Iran to curb its suspect nuclear program but there was no sign of any concessions from Vladimir Putin.

With Russia an influential voice in the international debate over Iran, the outcome of the 24-hour visit could have deep implications for whether Israel decides to strike Tehran's nuclear facilities or give the international community more time to find a diplomatic solution to the standoff.

Israel and Russia enjoy deep economic and cultural relations bolstered by the more than 1 million immigrants from the former Soviet Union who now live in the Jewish state. But they have deeply differing approaches to Iran's nuclear program and the

uprising in Tehran's close ally Syria. Russia has blocked drastic action against the two countries, while Israel has repeatedly hinted it may act militarily to stop Iran's nuclear program.

In a brief statement after meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Putin said their talks covered the situation in Iran and the bloody uprising in Syria, but added that he saw negotiations as the only solution for such matters.

Netanyahu countered with far more detail.

"We agree that nuclear weapons in the hands of Iran pose a grave danger, first for Israel but also for the region and the whole world," he said. "Two things need to be done now: we need to bolster the sanctions and bolster the demands."

Netanyahu insisted that all uranium enrichment in Iran must cease and its underground nuclear facility near Qom be dismantled. He added that "the killing and horrible suffering of the Syrian people" must be stopped.

Israel sees Iran as its most dangerous enemy because it is convinced the country's nuclear program is meant to build bombs and not for peaceful purposes such as energy production, as Iran insists. The fears are compounded by Tehran's frequent calls for Israel's destruction, support for anti-Israel militants and arsenal of ballistic missiles.

Israel has said repeatedly that it would not tolerate a nuclear Iran, and while saying it prefers a diplomatic solution has also hinted of using a military strike as a last resort. Israel itself is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons.

Iran is under four sets of Security Council sanctions because of its nuclear program. Israel has welcomed these but warned they are not enough. Efforts aimed at tougher U.N. sanctions have been opposed in the Security Council by Russia and China, both permanent veto-wielding members that have extensive financial interests in Iran.

Russia, for instance, has built a $1 billion nuclear reactor in Bushehr. But Moscow, bowing to U.S. and Israeli demands, has also scrapped a deal to sell Iran long-range missiles that could provide a powerful deterrent against a potential air attack.

Russia and China have joined world powers in a new set of low-level negotiations with Iran in July, after the last round yielded no breakthroughs.

Another Israeli concern is Syria. Russia has continued its arms sales to Damascus throughout the violent popular uprising against President Bashar Assad. Israel is afraid Russian weapons in Syria will fall into the hands of allied Hezbollah militants in neighboring Lebanon, something Israel says happened during its 2006 war with the Lebanese group.

Putin began his official visit at a ceremony to inaugurate a Soviet Red Army memorial in the coastal city of Netanya, paying tribute to fallen soldiers of World War II that included tens of thousands of Jews.

"The memory of the fallen is sacred in my eyes. I am moved that you feel the same thing in Israel," he said, facing the sculpture of a massive pair of wings on a wind-swept hilltop overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

President Shimon Peres linked the past to the challenges of the present.

"I am confident that Russia, which defeated fascism, will not allow similar threats today. Not the Iranian threat. And not the bloodshed in Syria," he said at the ceremony.

At a state dinner later Monday, Peres pressed Putin further.

"I ask of you again: raise your voice against a nuclear Iran, against destroying a people. You know well the depth of sensitivity of the Jewish people when we are threatened with destruction," he said.

Putin responded that Russia has a "national interest" to secure peace and quiet in Israel but did not elaborate further.

The trip was Putin's second in Israel, having last visited seven years ago. On Tuesday, he heads to the West Bank and Jordan.

The Russian leader came with an entourage of hundreds of officials and businesspeople, who will be exploring possible military, technology and energy deals between the two countries.

Putin said his visit stressed not only the friendly relations between the countries but also a "solid basis on which to build dialogue and partnership." He said he spoke with Netanyahu about cooperation in science, technology, agriculture, medicine and culture.

The leaders also discussed the victory of the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi in Egypt's presidential election, as well as stalled Israeli-Palestinian peacemaking.

"Israel appreciates the democratic process in Egypt and respects its outcome. We look forward to working with the new administration based upon the peace agreement between us," said Netanyahu. "I believe that peace is an essential interest of both countries and I believe that peace is the basic element of stability on our region."

Israel and Egypt signed a peace treaty in 1979. Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood has said it would maintain the treaty but would demand changes to it.

Tibits - A Restaurant Review - Authentic Vegetarian Recipes

Last week, Tibits , a vegetarian restaurant invited me and Nayna Kanabar a blogger friend?from?Simply foods?(who like me - also writes for the city connect website),?for a meal at their restaurant. This restaurant is centrally located in a really cool part of London, just a short walk from the Oxford Circus Tube Station.? The Tibits chain of restaurants is the brainchild of three Swiss brothers, Reto, Christian, and Daniel Frei. In 1998 these three brothers took part in Venture, a business plan competition organized? by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and professional services company McKinsey (www.venture.ch).? Their business plan impressed the jury and the concept won two awards. Rolf & Marielle Hiltl, owners of the?Hiltl?Restaurant, heard about the project in the media and contacted the Frei brothers. Together, they founded a company and developed the concept further.

Tibits is a fast food restaurant with a difference. It?s a place which allows you to choose your food at your pace and allows you relax and enjoy it at your pace too. ?It?s self service restaurant where all the food is laid out in an oval shaped food boat. ?The oval shape allows you to move easily around it to pick and choose your dishes.

It's also one of those restaurants you can go for a casual meal but could also?take your business clients if you wish. For their London location, reservations are not necessary. ?I would say that the price of their food and drinks was also reasonable considering the location. (Before?visiting?the restaurant, I suggest you check their website for their location, menu and price list).

Once you have selected your food, you take your plate to the bar where it is weighed. You are only charged by the weight of the food rather than the?portions so you can take small amounts of ?everything you wish to try out from the food boat.? ?

At the bar you can choose a selection of their freshly squeezed juices, cocktails, wines and beers.?

Their menu is very seasonal and all the ingredients, apart from their exotic fruits and vegetables are sourced locally. Nayna and I made several trips to the food boat and sampled most of their fresh salads and snacks. ?The salad with baby tomatoes and tofu was ?devine. The taste of apple and date chutney was just like the one my mum used to make. I tried several snacks but the one I liked the most was the jalepeno peppers stuffed with sour cream.

I tried their delicious Mexicano drink which was made with freshly?squeezed orange and carrot juice. As a keen juicer myself, I could taste tell that the juice was freshly made.
Here's evidence of some of the food we sampled between us.

We finished the meal with a selection of desserts - tiramisu and Cheesecake. My favourite was the?passion fruit?cheesecake.?

The staff were very friendly and helpful and at the same time left you to relax and take your time over the meal. It was a pleasure to see how enthusiastic they were about some of their dishes. ?

The?restaurant was clean and laid out with plenty of space in between tables.?The restaurant was busy but I didn't feel as though it was over crowded.?The food was constantly being replaced and the food area was kept clean and tidy. ?They had a selection of seating and I was pleased to see that some chairs were of quite a?good?height to enable disabled people to sit comfortably. I also noticed that it had its entrance enabled wheelchairs to enter the restaurant and it had a lift to enable disabled people to go downstairs if they wished to use the toilets. They also had a small play area for children which I am sure parents must appreciate when dining with their children.

Nayna and I had a good time catching up and also discussing the various items on the menu. We both liked the variety on the menu and I will certainly be eating here again. Do checkout their website for more information.?

As we left Tibits, we picked up some recipe cards which I think is a nice touch. ?I tried out their recipe for Linguine Pasta with courgettes and orange sauce (with a slight variation) and it turned out great.?

I would like to thank Tibits for letting us sample their menu and for allowing me to use some of their images.

Post-revolution Egyptians to US: Stay out

CAIRO ? There is a local advertisement in the arrivals hall at Cairo International Airport. The ad shows a picture of Egypt's iconic Tahrir Square, packed during the revolution, with a quote from U.S. President Barack Obama: "We should raise our children to be like Egyptian youth.?

The quote from Obama was shortly after Egyptians had revolted and toppled long-time dictator and American ally Hosni Mubarak. The ad reflects a sense of pride Egyptians have about how they inspired the world, including the U.S. president. It also shows how a genuine acknowledgment from the U.S. goes a long way in Egypt.

But when it comes to their attitudes about America?s involvement in their country?s affairs, few Egyptians view the U.S. favorably, and or more importantly, with any trust.

U.S. seen as a meddler
Egypt's relationship with America goes back decades. But Egypt was cemented as a cornerstone of U.S. policy in the Middle East after its Camp David Peace Treaty with Israel. Following that, the U.S. bankrolled the Mubarak regime and the military that sustained the regime for 30 years.

That?s not lost on ordinary Egyptians. They may not know the intricacies of U.S. policy in Egypt, but intuitively they know that the U.S. backed and legitimized the man who oppressed them for three decades.

NBC News

Alaa El Din Mohamed, a taxi cab driver in Cairo, shares his views about the U.S..

So it should come as no surprise that most Egyptians view U.S. involvement in Egypt negatively.

A recent Gallup poll found 81 percent of Egyptians oppose American aid to political groups. And 84 percent of Egyptians surveyed doubt the U.S. is serious about spreading democracy in the region. The overwhelming majority of Egyptians reject both U.S. aid to civil society organizations and economic assistance to the country as a whole. They see U.S. aid as instruments used to manipulate Egypt?s domestic and foreign policies.

Alaa El Din Mohamed, a 34-year-old taxi driver, summed up his current views on the U.S.

?We are looking out for our country?s interests. For Egypt's interests we want stability, we want to work, we want to advance forward. We don't have any problems with the U.S., but we're just interested in our own country,? he said. ?We want to be able to stand on our own two feet.? We want to look forward and then afterwards we can think about the U.S.?

And yet, despite the negative attitude, the U.S. as a country and Americans as a people remain symbols of democracy, freedom and modernity in the eyes of many ordinary Egyptians.

NBC News speaks with citizens from around the globe, asking the question, 'What Does America Mean to You?'

?The U.S. is a developed, advanced country and organized. Everything there is civilized that's what comes to my mind in regards to the U.S.,? Hala Abdel Rahman, a 50-year-old housewife, said when asked about her impressions of the country. ?We would hope and wish that Egypt can become a developed country like the U.S.?

Many Egyptians are still drawn to the idea of the U.S. as the ?land of opportunity? with thousands going there yearly to pursue educational opportunities and seek a better life.

Living in America still resonates loudly with Egyptians who believe most Americans enjoy a decent quality of life. In fact, many here draw a distinction between Americans and American foreign policy.

NBC News

Mona Bayoumi had high hopes for U.S. President Barack Obama and how he could improve things in the Middle East, but she said she's been disappointed.

?America as a people and stuff are really good people, they have values and are good people,? said Mohamed, the cab driver. ?But the most important thing is they don?t interfere in our country.?

Feeling let down by Obama
During the Egyptian revolution, I remember seeing a poster in Cairo?s Tahrir Square that read, ?Yes We Can, Too,? playing off of Obama?s 2008 presidential campaign slogan that change is possible.

Today, many people in Egypt feel let down by Obama who they believe was slow to respond to the Egyptian people?s own calls for change during the revolution. Others believe Obama hasn?t followed through on his promise to change how the U.S. deals with the Middle East ? from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict to Iran.

Mona Bayoumi, a 25-year-old administrator a Cairo arts college, believes there is a gap between what the U.S. promises and what it does.

?At the beginning when President Obama first came, we had a lot of hope that things would improve and be fixed ? especially with Iraq and Iran,? said Bayoumi. ?But we waited for something to happen and we didn't see anything...To be honest nothing that we expected to happen happened and nothing that we wanted happened.?

In a country of 85 million people, gauging the public?s attitudes is always a challenge.

But the underlying principle in how Egyptians view the U.S. is simple. After decades of being on the receiving end of U.S. foreign policy that arguably didn?t improve the quality of their lives, nor advance their own interests, Egyptians want to chart their own future with as little help from Washington as possible.

Whether the U.S. lets them is a whole different question.

Karadzic's Request for Acquittal Rejected :: Balkan Insight

The judges of the Hague Tribunal, ICTY, say that the prosecution has presented enough evidence to find Karadzic, former Bosnian Serb leader, guilty of ten out of total 11 counts of indictment, including the Srebrenica genocide.

However, the ICTY judges have decided to acquit Karadzic on the count of genocide in seven Bosnian municipalities in 1992.

Reading the decision, the presiding judge, O-gon Kwon, said that the evidence presented by the prosecution - in regard to an alleged genocide in the municipalities of Bratunac, Foca, Kljuc, Prijedor, Sanski Most, Vlasenica and Zvornik ? do not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the Bosnian Serbs wanted to ?destroy part or in whole other ethnic groups?.

The ICTY judges said, however, that the prosecution had presented enough evidence in regard to other counts of the indictment, including the Srebrenica genocide and the siege of Sarajevo.

Karadzic and his lawyer Peter Robinson presented on June 11 an oral request to the ICTY Trial Chamber to be freed of all charges contained in the indictment.

The former Bosnian Serb leader has asked to be acquitted on the basis that prosecutors had failed to provide enough evidence.

Originally, Karadzic was charged with genocide in Srebrenica and seven other municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, expulsion of Bosniaks and Croats in much of Bosnia, terror against civilians in Sarajevo, and taking members of UN peace forces as hostages, in the period between 1992 and 1995.

The presiding judge Kwon said that the Trial Chamber found that Karadzic, as supreme commander of the Bosnian Serb army, was guilty of crimes committed in Srebrenica, Sarajevo and other Bosnian municipalities, except the genocide in 1992.

According to this ICTY decision, the prosecution proved there was a joint criminal enterprise, headed by Karadzic, whose goal was to forcibly remove non-Serb population from large portions of Bosnia, under the control of the Bosnian Serbs.

?The Chamber decided that based on this evidence, an objective judge could find that Bosnian Serb forces committed genocide in Srebrenica,? said Judge Kwon.

Kwon also added that Karadzic?s view that Sarajevo was not under siege was rejected, because the evidence shows that civilians in the city were subject to a campaign of terror by the Bosnian Serbs.

The judges also accepted there was sufficient evidence to find Karadzic guilty of crimes in 20 municipalities in Bosnia, where Bosnian Serb forces expelled and terrorized non-Serbs, and the taking of international soldiers as hostages in 1995.

Karadzic?s trial started in October 2009, and the Hague prosecution has finished presenting its evidence last month.? The defence will call its first witnesses in October this year.

Truck Test Digest - Skid plate panel system for SUVs

Developed with extensive field testing, ARB skid plates give protection to vital underbody components

DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT:

The first skid plate panel system specifically designed for SUVs, these panels feature the same construction as the current range of panels, i.e. pressed and folded 3mm steel. Due to the Prado 120/150, 4Runner and FJ Cruiser sharing the same chassis platform, the same skid plate design has been used for the four vehicles. However, a second kit has been built to suit the 4Runner with Kinetic suspension system as a slightly different lower ?bulge? is required in the front panel due to the positioning of the kinetic sway bar.

The transmission panel is common to both kits and also to petrol and diesel engine variants. It has a two position mounting bracket providing a lower mount for petrol engine vehicles where the exhaust sits lower than diesel models. The transmission panel is also tapered to the rear to clear chassis bracing that is unique to the Prado/FJ chassis design.

PROTECTION & STYLING CHARACTERISTICS:

Developed with extensive field testing, ARB skid plates give protection to vital underbody components with vehicle specific models protecting steering, engine oil panel, transmission and transfer case where applicable. Panels are easily removed for vehicle servicing and were practical, include access to oil panel drain plugs. Is rodent control los angeles something ... - IdeaMarketers.com

Is rodent control los angeles something you have been thinking about? If so, this means that you have a problem at your home or place of employment. While this may be something that you are scared of, don't worry - there is help out there. Of course, you need to find a company that can help you control this problem. Better yet, you want to find somebody who can help you get rid of the rodents once and for all. This will make you feel much better about yourself as well as your property as a whole.

There are many steps to take if you are interested in rodent control:

1. Find out what type of problem you are having. This is the first step in finding a solution. Of course, you may not know what type of rodent you are dealing with unless you have seen it with your own eyes. If nothing else, gather as much information as possible - you are going to need this in the near future. 2. Contact a rodent control company that is well known for offering services in your part of Los Angeles. When you do this, you know that you are now in good hands. It is during this time that you should share any knowledge you have with the company you decide to hire. This will go a long way in helping the worker pinpoint the issue and put a plan of attack into place. 3. Make sure the problem is solved sooner rather than later. It is one thing to call in a rodent control company. It is another thing entirely to make sure you are no longer facing any issues. Keep an eye on your property in the future to ensure that the problem does not come back. How to Find a Provider

With so many rodent control companies out there, you need to find the one that is going to be best for your property. This means a provider that offers a high level of effective service at a price you can afford.

Here are three questions to ask as you attempt to settle on the right company:

1. Do I have any experience hiring a rodent control company? 2. How much money am I willing to pay to get this problem under control once and for all? 3. Do I know of any companies in the area that have a good reputation for being able to handle this type of problem?

When you answer these three questions, you will find yourself in position to make an informed decision in the near future.

There is nothing worse than a rodent problem. That being said, you have to focus on finding a solution as soon as possible. When you hire a rodent control company in Los Angeles, you at least know that you are getting the level of service you deserve.

These steps can help you control any rodent problem you may be dealing with. The sooner you call a professional the sooner you can rid your property of pests.

Tv Meio Ambiente | Climate change fears 'overblown' says ...

Rex Tillerson acknowledges man-made global warming in speech, but says society will adapt to climate change

ExxonMobil chief executive, Rex Tillerson, has said fears about climate change, drilling and energy dependence are overblown.

In a speech on Wednesday, Tillerson acknowledged that burning of fossil fuels is warming the planet, but said society will be able to adapt. The risks of oil and gas drilling are well understood and can be mitigated, he said. And dependence on other nations for oil is not a concern as long as access to supply is certain, he said.

Tillerson blamed a public that is ?illiterate? in science and maths, a ?lazy? press, and advocacy groups that ?manufacture fear? for energy misconceptions, in a speech at the Council on Foreign Relations.

He highlighted that huge discoveries of oil and gas in North America have reversed a 20-year decline in US oil production in recent years. He also trumpeted the global oil industry?s ability to deliver fuels during a two-year period of dramatic uncertainty in the Middle East ? the world?s most important oil and gas-producing region.

?No one, anywhere, any place in the world has not been able to get crude oil to fuel their economies,? he said.

In his speech and during a question-and-answer session afterwards, he addressed three major energy issues: climate change, oil and gas drilling pollution, and energy dependence.

Tillerson, in a break with predecessor Lee Raymond, acknowledged that global temperatures are rising. ?Clearly there is going to be an impact,? he said. But he questioned the ability of climate models to predict the magnitude of the impact. He said that people would be able to adapt to rising sea levels and changing climates that may force agricultural production to shift.

?We have spent our entire existence adapting. We?ll adapt,? he said. ?It?s an engineering problem and there will be an engineering solution.?

Andrew Weaver, the chairman of climate modelling and analysis at the University of Victoria in Canada, disagreed with Tillerson?s characterisation of climate modelling. Weaver said modelling can give a very good sense of the type of climate changes that are likely, and that adapting to those changes will be much more difficult and disruptive than Tillerson seems to be acknowledging.

Steve Coll, author of Private Empire: ExxonMobil and American Power, said he was surprised Exxon would already be talking about ways society could adapt to climate change when there is still time to try to avoid its worst effects. Also, he said, research suggests that adapting to climate change could be far more expensive than reducing emissions now. ?Moving entire cities would be very expensive,? he said. Legislation or regulation that would help slow emissions of global warming gases would likely lead to lower demand for oil and gasoline, and could reduce Exxon?s profit.

Tillerson expressed frustration at the level of public concern over new drilling techniques that tap natural gas and oil in shale formations under several states. He said environmental advocacy groups that ?manufacture fear? have alarmed a public that doesn?t understand drilling practices ? or maths, science or engineering in general. He blamed ?lazy? journalists for producing stories that scare the public but don?t investigate the claims of advocacy groups.

Drilling for oil and gas will always involve risks of spills and accidents, he said., but those risks are manageable and worth taking because they are small given the amount of energy they produce.

Drilling in shale formations, he said, only poses a small risk to those living nearby. It is neither life-threatening nor long-lasting and can be controlled in the event of an accident.

Drillers force millions of gallons of water mixed with sand and some hazardous chemicals into shale formations. The technique breaks up rock and creates escape routes for oil and gas. If the drilling wastewater is not treated properly or if it seeps through cracked drilling pipes, it could contaminate drinking water.

The industry?s biggest challenge, he said, is ?taking an illiterate public and try to help them understand why we can manage these risks?.

Tillerson made a distinction between energy security and energy dependence. He said that energy security ? making sure that the economy has access to energy ? is crucial.

But he said access to energy is not in peril. ?Some of the fears around energy security are not well founded,? he said.

The quest for energy independence, though, is misguided, he said. It doesn?t matter where the US gets oil because crude is priced globally. Even if the US used only oil from north America, a disruption in the Middle East would increase global prices, hurt the US and global economies, and force Americans to pay more at the pump.

Even if the US no longer needed Middle Eastern oil, it would likely want to play a major role in helping maintain the region?s security, Tillerson said.

92% Headhunters

Do you ever tire of hearing that a Hollywood remake is in the pipeline, when the ink has hardly dried on the original script? Like "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo", "Cell 211" and "Let The Right One In" before it, this is another that has had the green light for an English language version. It's easy to see why there would be interest in this as it's an exceptionally good thriller. I just don't see why it's necessary to have it redone. Roger Brown (Aksel Hennie) is a high-flying businessman who works as a headhunter. He scouts potential applicants for executive jobs. While interviewing them, he learns very useful information that leads him to his second source of income: a sideline in executing valuable art robberies. His extravagant and expensive lifestyle can't be funded by his headhunting job alone. One particular interviewee is Clas Greve (Nicolaj Coster-Waldau). He has all the credentials for a post that Brown needs to fill but he also has just inherited a piece of art that will cure all of Brown's financial woes - if he can just get his hands on it. As it turns out though, this art theft is not as simple as his previous ones and Greve is not as buttoned up as he makes out. As this film opens we are introduced to unlikely leading actor Aksel Hennie who has an appearance that resembles the love child of Christopher Walken and Steve Buscemi. He's not your average leading man and his character is not that appealing either. He's a self-centred weasel of a man that seems to lack any morals but you know that things are, not entirely, going to go to plan for this scheming, double-crossing thief and that's exactly what captures your attention and provides the hook in this adaptation of Norwegian writer Jo Nesbo's novel. Director Morten Tyldum is wise enough to play his cards when he needs them and wrings out the suspense, masterfully, at every turn. He mounts the tension slowly before staging one gripping scene after another. The unpredictability of the spiralling plot delivers genuine excitement, helped immeasurably by natural characters and performers. Hennie in particular, is absolutely brilliant and will no doubt become a household name after this (apparently he already is, in his native Norway). Kudos to screenwriters Lars Gudmstead and Ulf Ryberg. It's their tight, deliberately paced and unpredictable script that keeps you guessing and shows a good level of intelligence. Admittedly, I haven't read the novel but if I were author Jo Nesbo, I'd be very proud of the job that has been done here. When the headhunter becomes the headhunted, this film grips like a vice and refuses to let go. I've seen quite a few film's from Scandinavia over recent years and have been very impressed with the high standard they are delivering. This is no exception and a thriller that will definitely compete with the best of the year.

Glucose deprivation activates feedback loop that kills cancer cells, study shows

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? Compared to normal cells, cancer cells have a prodigious appetite for glucose, the result of a shift in cell metabolism known as aerobic glycolysis or the "Warburg effect." Researchers focusing on this effect as a possible target for cancer therapies have examined how biochemical signals present in cancer cells regulate the altered metabolic state.

Now, in a unique study, a UCLA research team led by Thomas Graeber, a professor of molecular and medical pharmacology, has investigated the reverse aspect: how the metabolism of glucose affects the biochemical signals present in cancer cells.

In research published June 26 in the journal Molecular Systems Biology, Graeber and his colleagues demonstrate that glucose starvation -- that is, depriving cancer cells of glucose -- activates a metabolic and signaling amplification loop that leads to cancer cell death as a result of the toxic accumulation of reactive oxygen species, the cell-damaging molecules and ions targeted by antioxidants like vitamin C.

The research, which involved UCLA scientists from the Crump Institute for Molecular Imaging, the Institute for Molecular Medicine, the California NanoSystems Institute, the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research, and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, demonstrates the power of systems biology in uncovering relationships between metabolism and signaling at the network level.

"Most strikingly, our discovery that glucose withdrawal causes both cell death and increased tyrosine phosphorylation is intriguing because increased tyrosine kinase signaling is normally associated with cell growth," said Nicholas A. Graham, a senior postdoctoral scholar in Graeber's lab who helped design the project.

To explain the seemingly contradictory result that glucose deprivation reduced viability and at the same time increased signaling, the authors used an unbiased systems-biology approach that included phospho-tyrosine mass spectrometry and other biochemical profiling techniques.

Assessing the "crosstalk" between metabolism and signaling, they discovered that the glucose deprivation activates a positive feedback loop whereby the withdrawal of glucose induces increased levels of reactive oxygen species, which in turn inhibit negative regulators of tyrosine signaling. The resulting supra-physiological levels of tyrosine phosphorylation then generate additional reactive oxygen species.

"Because cancer cells live on the edge of what is metabolically feasible, this amplifying cycle of oxidative stress ultimately overwhelms and kills the cancer cell," Graeber explained. "These findings illustrate the delicate balance that exists between metabolism and signaling in the maintenance of cancer cell homeostasis."

In addition, the authors showed the possibility of exploiting this positive feedback loop for therapeutic intervention. Combining short-term glucose deprivation with an inhibitor of tyrosine phosphatases, they demonstrated synergistic cell death in a cancer cell line.

"Understanding the links between metabolism and signaling will empower new therapeutic approaches toward inducing this metabolic catastrophe," Graham said. "This study provides a framework for rational design of combinatorial therapeutics targeting both metabolism and signaling in cancer."

The findings by Graeber and his colleagues add to the emerging concept of systems integration between oncogenic signaling networks and the metabolism of malignant tumors. The work lays a foundation for future studies delineating how signaling and metabolism are linked, with the ultimate goal of refining therapeutic strategies targeting cancer metabolism.

The research team also included collaborators from the department of neurology and the human oncology and pathogenesis program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the department of pharmacology at Weill-Cornell Medical College.

The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the California Institute of Technology-University of California, Los Angeles, Joint Center for Translational Medicine.

DNP ASUS' highend Transformer Pad TF700 is coming to the US next month for $499 and up

The last time we heard from ASUS, the company was on a tear at Computex, unveiling Windows 8 device after Windows 8 device. Looking back, it seems quaint that its mobile lineup was so recently dominated by Android tablets -- and that the Transformer series was once regarded as unique for having detachable keyboard docks. But this week, at least, it's back to Android for ASUS: the company just announced that the Transformer Pad Infinity announced back at Mobile World Congress is finally going on sale here in the US. It's expected to hit shelves the week of July 16th, starting at $499 for the 32GB model and $599 for the 64GB version. Like other Transformer tabs, the accompanying dock will sell separately for $149.

We've got a rundown of the full specs after the break, and as it turns out, we've also been testing one for the past week. So once you're done browsing those official press shots, head on over to our full review for benchmarks, impressions and many, many more photos.
