DNA and quantum dots: All that glitters is not gold

Jan. 25, 2013 ? A team of researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has shown that by bringing gold nanoparticles close to the dots and using a DNA template to control the distances, the intensity of a quantum dot's fluorescence can be predictably increased or decreased. This breakthrough opens a potential path to using quantum dots as a component in better photodetectors, chemical sensors and nanoscale lasers.

Anyone who has tried to tune a radio knows that moving their hands toward or away from the antenna can improve or ruin the reception. Although the reasons are well understood, controlling this strange effect is difficult, even with hundred-year-old radio technology. Similarly, nanotechnology researchers have been frustrated trying to control the light emitted from quantum dots, which brighten or dim with the proximity of other particles.

The NIST team developed ways to accurately and precisely place different kinds of nanoparticles near each other and to measure the behavior of the resulting nanoscale constructs. Because nanoparticle-based inventions may require multiple types of particles to work together, it is crucial to have reliable methods to assemble them and to understand how they interact.

The researchers looked at two types of nanoparticles, quantum dots, which glow with fluorescent light when illuminated, and gold nanoparticles, which have long been known to enhance the intensity of light around them. The two could work together to make nanoscale sensors built using rectangles of woven DNA strands, formed using a technique called "DNA origami."

These DNA rectangles can be engineered to capture different types of nanoparticles at specific locations with a precision of about one nanometer. Tiny changes in the distance between a quantum dot and a gold nanoparticle near one another on the rectangle cause the quantum dot to glow more or less brightly as it moves away from or toward the gold. Because these small movements can be easily detected by tracking the changes in the quantum dot's brightness, they can be used to reveal, for example, the presence of a particular chemical that is selectively attached to the DNA rectangle. However, getting it to work properly is complicated, says NIST's Alex Liddle.

"A quantum dot is highly sensitive to the distance between it and the gold, as well as the size, number and arrangement of the gold particles," says Liddle, a scientist with the NIST Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology. "These factors can boost its fluorescence, mask it or change how long its glow lasts. We wanted a way to measure these effects, which had never been done before."

Liddle and his colleagues made several groups of DNA rectangles, each with a different configuration of quantum dots and gold particles in a solution. Using a laser as a spotlight, the team was able to follow the movement of individual DNA rectangles in the liquid, and also could detect changes in the fluorescent lifetime of the quantum dots when they were close to gold particles of different sizes. They also showed that they could exactly predict the lifetime of the fluorescence of the quantum dot depending on the size of the nearby gold nanoparticles.

While their tracking technique was time consuming, Liddle says that the strength of their results will enable them to engineer the dots to have a specific desired lifetime. Moreover, the success of their tracking method could lead to better measurement methods.

"Our main goals for the future," he concludes, "are to build better nanoscale sensors using this approach and to develop the metrology necessary to measure their performance."

Opera about Nazi atrocity being shown in Austria

VIENNA (AP) ? Austrian parliamentarians and invited guests are gathering to watch the premiere of an opera depicting how Nazis methodically killed mentally or physically deficient children at a Vienna hospital during World War II.

"Spiegelgrund" is the work of Austrian composer Peter Androsch, whose great grandfather died in a concentration camp. Friday's performance will mark International Holocaust Day in Austria ? a nation still atoning for its role in atrocities committed by the Nazis during the war.

The opera is being performed in a chamber of parliament used for special sessions and ceremonial events, and shown on Internet, starting at 1600 GMT (11 a.m. EST).

Since the war, Austria has gone from denial to full recognition of its part in Nazi atrocities.

The world marks Holocaust Memorial Day on Sunday.

Review: Parker | People's Critic: Film Reviews - seattlepi.com

Can an action movie with Jason Statham, Jennifer Lopez, Nick Nolte, Michael Chiklis, Wendell Pierce (The Wire), and Bobby Canavalle (Boardwalk Empire) be bad? The answer: Parker.

Stop me if you?ve heard this before ? A thief is double-crossed by his crew, left for dead, and is out for revenge because of his ?principles? or ?code?.? That?s the synopsis for Parker and 75 other straight to DVD action films.

The real question: How is this even possible with a cast that?s adequate enough to pull off a robbery/revenge film? Despite the film?s unusually long opening that include numerous flashbacks, it opens with action movie clich?s that work:

  • Multiple disguises to pull off a heist
  • Criminal with rules teamed up with a hothead criminal
  • Tear away priest disguise (one of my favorites)
  • Double cross-left for dead combo
  • The line ?It?s not about the money?
  • Sneaking out hospital by pretending to be a doctor as police come in to question you (bonus point for recovering from life threatening injuries faster than Wolverine)
  • Stolen ambulance getaway
  • Using hospital kit to treat your wounds (bonus points for administering your own IV)
  • Switching cars (bonus point for multiple car switches)
  • ?It?s bigger than we thought. It goes all the way to the top? speech (bonus for understanding Nick Nolte)

A collage of clich?s matched with Statham?s action movie pedigree should at least be entertaining. Sadly, Parker falls short by underutilizing its good actors, not allowing Statham to do what he does best, and force feeding a Jennifer Lopez storyline that?s pointless and uninteresting. Great actors like Wendell Pierce and Bobby Canavalle are minor players in a film that desperately needs their talents. Allowing Pierce and Canavalle to flex their acting chops could only help keep the S.S Parker from sinking. Instead, their screen time is taken up by a J-Lo and Statham?s version of House Hunters in West Palm Beach.

Even with the predictable plot and the film?s star players sitting the bench, Parker doesn?t start to spin out of control until we?re introduced to Leslie, played by Jennifer Lopez, the broke real estate agent who?s recently divorced ? or as I like to call her Ms. Unnecessary. The middle of the film focuses entirely too long on her story and why she?s in this predicament. ?Newsflash: People paying $10 to see Jason Statham bring the pain do?not?care about sad real estate agents that get their cars get repossessed. Well, unless they shoot up the guy coming to take the car ? then things might get interesting.

Leslie?s relationship with Parker is ambiguous at best. It?s unclear is she?s motivated to get out of her situation or if she?s hot for Parker ? at least until Leslie has the sad face when Parker?s almost always topless girlfriend shows up. What makes their relationship even more bizarre is seeing Parker and Leslie exchange a passionate kiss after the first part of the movie establishes Parker?s relationship with his girlfriend and her dad (Nick Nolte) as being important. The whole thing is almost as confusing as Statham?s cartoonish southern accent.

The best scene in Parker comes at the the finale. Despite the film?s faults, the final showdown versus the gang is why people love casting Statham in these roles. He?s perfect for those few ?minutes. The action sequence is right in his wheelhouse of over-the-top kills that involve?gun-play, broken bones, and funny one-liners. ?Those 10 minutes are exactly what Parker should?ve been for 85 minutes.

There are a lot of things wrong with Parker. Was it the film?s four endings? The plot points to nowhere? The bad dialogue? 75% of Michael Chiklis dialogue is him screaming, ?Paaaaaaaaaaaarkkkkkeeeerrrrrr?? ?Or Nick Nolte needing subtitles. The truth is we?ve seen Statham as the criminal with a conscious a bit too often and maybe this one trick pony has run its course.

Is Google Taking on the Telcos? | Daily Ticker - Yahoo! Finance

Google (GOOG) first transformed how people use the Internet.

The tech giant has already started revolutionizing the auto industry with its ?driverless? cars. The company's "Google Glass" (computerized, high-tech glasses that allow the wearer to take photos, use voice commands to send instant messages and video chat with friends, among other functions) project is altering how individuals communicate with one another.

Now the Mountain View, Calif. company may have its sights on revamping America?s wireless network.

Related: Google Will Face Greater Competition in 2013: The Economist's Daniel Franklin

Google quietly submitted an application to the Federal Communications Commission last week for permission to build an ?experimental radio service.? According to BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk, Google?s interest in a wireless license might mean the company has plans to construct a 50-site test wireless network at its headquarters. Google has requested to use the wireless frequencies controlled by broadband provider Clearwire.

Google?s move into the wireless space makes sense, says Piecyk. As more people have access to high-speed Internet, more online advertisements will be seen and clicked, meaning more revenue for companies like Google. Internet users will get a sneak peak of ?Google Fiber? ? Google?s broadband answer to existing Internet services -- later this year once Google engineers finish installing the fiber in Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo., homes and buildings. Google says its broadband service runs 100 times faster than its competitors and boasts unlimited, high-speed data: ?instant downloads? and ?crystal clear high definition TV,? according to the Google Fiber site.

Piecyk says he believes Google would expand its ultra-fast Internet service to other U.S. cities after the two-city trial. Even though the company has remained mum on its wireless intentions, Piecyk points out that Google CFO Patrick Pichette confirmed that Google Fiber is ?not a hobby? during the company?s earnings call with analysts this week.

Related: Why Your Phone, Cable & Internet Bills Cost So Much

?We really think that we should be making good business with this opportunity, and we are going to continue to look at the possibility of expanding, but right now we just got to nail ? because we are in the early days ? we just got to nail Kansas City,? Pichette said. ?It?s a perfect place for us to kind of debug all of the elements of the product and the experience for the users.?

If Google chooses to officially compete with existing wireless providers, the consumer will likely win, Piecyk says. Dominant wireless carriers are ending unlimited data and moving toward metered data plans.

?To have a guy like Google keep other operators honest and invest money to get faster speeds in this country is a great thing,? Piecyk adds. ?We should definitely be happy Google is doing what it?s doing in Kansas City.?

Apple TV would signal future innovation

In any other context, the idea of punishing a company that delivered an 18 percent year-over-year increase, bringing quarterly revenue to $54.5 billion, would be absurd, but Apple, in a way, is a victim of its own success.

91% Amour

All Critics (128) | Top Critics (34) | Fresh (117) | Rotten (11)

Each actor draws on a lifetime's worth of experience, performing with grace and rare, uncompromising realism.

There's nowhere to hide: The film cuts no corners and stings with the authenticity of life's fragility.

The movie avoids melodrama; instead, it's just extraordinarily intimate, with touches of visual poetry like the pigeon that gets into the apartment and won't leave, an image of our own heedless tenacity.

The film is a graphic portrayal of the unfunny end game we're all fated to play; the title is just a simple declaration of how best to play it.

"Amour" is also unforgettable and one of a kind, two hours of torment that, in the end, you will probably not regret.

Small, sure and stunningly acted, this is a picture of exacting control, which is to be expected from Haneke, whose works include Cache and The White Ribbon.

A bitter, pitiless piece of work. We can admire its components, but we're repulsed by its vision.

Haneke's self-indulgent approach is getting old to me. His devoted fans will like it, but others will most likely be scratching their heads trying to figure out how this got a Best Picture nomination.

It's upsetting material lined with lead by Haneke, who searches for the meaning of love but can't help but dwell on the details of decay.

Amour is as heartbreaking and real as it gets.

Tough and beautiful, it secures Haneke's reputation as one of the world's best.

Two of the world's best actors, Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Riva, play Amour's octogenarian couple, so it's surprising that the characters aren't very interesting.

Haneke addresses the ravaging effects of aging in a starkly intimate way but Amour oddly lacks affectivity. Something that should be overflowing with emotion is strangely as sterile as Georges and Anne's Parisian apartment.

unforgettable portrait of old age

The audacious performances by both veteran actors are wonderful, and the film never resorts to cheap sentimentality.

Powerful and well-acted, this drama meticulously captures the pain and perils of aging in a way that will be hard to forget.

Haneke treats Georges and Anne with absolute respect, never pandering to sentiment or clich? and most assuredly not sugarcoating the experience of walking one's partner through suffering, toward death.

Haneke doesn't offer easy solutions or pat emotions. He merely offers us a chance to eavesdrop and holds a mirror up to our own fears of old age, hopes for love, and challenges through life.

A confident, lovingly articulated mood piece about a subject that is universal, yet rarely told.

Video Traffic Secrets: Success With Video Marketing

It?s time to talk video traffic. Video marketing is by far some of the best traffic I get. The traffic and leads I generate from my videos convert 50% faster than any other lead I attract online. Why? Let?s find out how and why video is a must if you want to drive traffic like a beast online?

Lights, Camera, Traffic!

Think generating video traffic is scary? Think again. Once you begin to unleash the power of what i believe is one of the most effective marketing strategies on the web you?ll be ready to say lights, camera, traffic!

Video marketing is effective for a couple of reasons. People like to be entertained?and in a world filled with ?reality stars? and ?over night sensations? people are intrigued with the thought of learning, engaging and ?living their lives? through the stories and successes of others.

Video is the one medium where people can really get a sense of who you are as a person, a professional and an expert. They get to see you, hear you and get to know you through the information you record and upload to the Internet. There are people who have been following me for years online who I?ve never spoken to or met face-to-face who feel like they know me because they watch my videos.

So how can you maximize your blog traffic and build relationships through video?

Not All Videos Are Created Equal

There is a reason why some videos become viral and other just collect dust online.

The best videos that you can use on your blog are those that you do yourself, were people can get to know you, your personality and ?feel? your presence. Polished and perfect is not what ?high converting videos?are made of.

It?s best to do a video that is casual yet professional. One that really connects you to your audience. Studies show that if you get too perfect people won?t trust you. It?s unnatural to be perfect! it?s almost like to you are trying to hard.

Truth be told, no one likes a super-polished-perfect-all-the-time leader.

WHY?

Because no one is perfect and perfection is something that a lot of people will not relate to. They want to aspire to be like someone they enjoy watching, who can share stories and experiences that hit them not only in the mind but in the heart as well.

Getting Started With Video

It is easier than ever to publish videos and drive targeted video traffic to your blog. I?ll upload videos to YouTube, Facebook and Viddler and if I need a to protect my videos say, if I?m using them for a membership site or info-product, I?ll use Amazon S3.

I shoot videos from my MacBook, my iPhone or even with my handheld camera. When you are just getting started online there is no need for special software ? just get the job done. Now this also doesn?t mean you want to upload a blurry, shaky video, with background noise in an unprofessional setting with bad lighting. Casual does not mean low quality. You want high quality, engaging, interactive and enjoyable.

Deliver high quality content. That is your priority. Talk to people as if they were your friend. Don?t use words you normally wouldn?t use. Feel free to be yourself. People will appreciate the authentic you ? flaws and all.

While it may take a few tries, just keep practicing. The more videos you do the better you?ll get. Sometimes the very first take is the best take. It seems like the more you try to get it right the more you end up messing it up!

So?take a deep breath and just go for it.

The Secret To Success With Video

It?s better to do 20 videos and learn as you go than to never get a video out there because you are always trying to be ?perfect?. Be yourself, YOU are the only one who can do that and there is NO ONE that can deliver content the way you can!

Delta Air Lines clings to $7M profit in 4Q

(AP) ? Delta Air Lines said Tuesday that its fourth-quarter profit was nearly wiped out by Superstorm Sandy and special charges.

The storm forced airlines to cancel more than 20,000 flights. The impact was bigger at Delta because Sandy also slowed its operations at its new oil refinery near Philadelphia.

Delta's goal in restarting the refinery was to maximize jet fuel production and reduce the airline's fuel bill. But Sandy slowed the refinery's restart, and the refinery lost $63 million for the quarter and added 7 cents per gallon to the price of Delta's jet fuel. Delta said it expects the refinery to be profitable in the current quarter.

Delta said Sandy cut $100 million from its fourth-quarter profit. It recorded another $231 million in special items. What was left was net income for the quarter of $7 million, or a penny per share. During the same period last year Delta earned $425 million, or 51 cents per share.

Without special items, earnings would have been $238 million, or 28 cents per share.

Revenue rose 2 percent to $8.6 billion. Both the adjusted profit and the revenue were slightly better than expected by analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Delta's 2012 profit rose 18 percent to $1 billion, or $1.19 per share. In 2011 it earned $854 million, or $1.01 per share. Full-year revenue rose 4 percent to $36.67 billion.

Delta said it would cut first-quarter flying capacity by 2 percent to 4 percent. Airlines have trying to keep a lid on growth to they can charge more for the seats that remain.

Shares of Delta Air Lines Inc., based in Atlanta, rose 4 cents to $13.65 in premarket trading.

A Parent's Guide to Choosing the Perfect Pet - Dog Training Devices

A friend of mine recently confessed that he?d never had a pet as a child. My reaction was both one of surprise and pity. I looked at him like he had been deprived in some way and had been cruelly treated by his parents. How could he have gotten this far in life and become a fully rounded adult without the wonderful experience of a pet?! He has no understanding as to why I?m so attached to my dog and why I?ll happily take him out in all weathers and spend an enormous amount of money giving him everything that he needs. What I didn?t realise was that, my friend Pete wasn?t deprived, I was just lucky!

Pet Academy

rabbitChildhood pets can teach a child a lot of things. Firstly, they teach responsibility. A child that has begged to have a rabbit could be allowed to keep one but on the proviso that they fed it, played with it and maybe even cleaned it out now and again.

Keeping pets also teaches children an important lesson on life and death. Invariably they will experience the loss of their pet at some point, which although distressing, will be an experience that they can cope with and understand through sensitive handling by their parents. This then prepares them for when death and loss occurs within human life.

Involving them in the health needs of their pet will teach them a little about science and medicine. For example, having them watch whilst you administer medicine such as Eliminall cat flea treatment will teach them a little about biology, even though it might be of the animal rather than human variety!

Tasks that are involved in caring for a pet can have health and general well-being benefits. Walking a dog or playing with it in the garden takes the child away from the television or computer and means that they get some exercise. They can also develop their motor skills and coordination by playing games such fetch.

Having considered the benefits of childhood pet ownership, the next step is to decide what kind is the most suitable for your family.

Once I saw a Fishy?

Fish are a fairly low maintenance starter-pet. Impressive to look at and with fun accessories to add to their tanks, fish are a good way to introduce basic pet care to your child. As they take up very little room, are inexpensive and take little care other than feeding and cleaning out, this is an excellent first pet choice. Your child gets the fun of picking out their pet, naming and caring for it; however the responsibility level is fairly low for the family. You can even get fish food that will last in the tank for protracted periods of time so that you can go on holiday without having to arrange care.

Night Fever

Again a fairly low maintenance pet, a hamster or gerbil has the added advantage of being cute and fluffy but your child can handle them and keep them out of the way in their own rooms. The only slight disadvantage is that hamsters are nocturnal and so may be sleeping during the day and may make noise at night.

Raining Cats and Dogs

willow_catCats and dogs are probably the most popular of childhood pets; however they are slightly more high maintenance to care for. These are real family pets and should only be adopted if the whole family is keen on the idea. They need feeding at specific intervals, exercise, amusement and either letting in and out of the house or being taken for walks. They also need cleaning and having their health maintained. They can be expensive and you will be required to arrange a pet sitter or a visit to the cattery/kennels should you be going away overnight or longer. On the upside, the ownership of cats and dogs really teaches your child about care, responsibility and life. Your pet will become a real member of the family with a real personality and the all-important fluffy, cute factor. Ultimately a dog or cat becomes a special friend for your child.

Sally Dimmock?had a whole range of pets as a child and these days she writes a blog about her precious dog Sammy. She also writes pet?s health articles, advising on medical treatments such as worming tablets and?Eliminall cat flea treament.

Delight as Lytchett Matravers recreation ground gets ?60,000 ...

?A DORSET village is celebrating after being given a ?60,000 grant to carry out major drainage work on its recreation ground.

The field at Lytchett Matravers is home to the Lytchett Red Triangle Football Club and Youth Football Club, as well a popular Saturday morning soccer school for boys and girls.

But in winter months, matches regularly have to be cancelled because of waterlogging. The soccer school has also suffered, with some youngsters giving up because of the frequency with which training has had to be called off.

The funding boost from SITA Trust will allow around half of the necessary work to be carried out at the ground.

Steve Reid, chairman of the Lytchett Matravers Sports club, said: ?This project is a great boost for the local community, including youth and senior football teams.?

Club secretary Peter Ashton explained that another ?30,000 would be needed to complete the improvements.

?The ground is used by hundreds of youngsters,?? he said.

?Between November and February, because the pitches are so wet, we can?t run the soccer school.

?The children then lose interest and we lose a bit of revenue.? Jools Granville of SITA Trust said: ?The community of Lytchett Matravers has been fundraising for a number of years to turn their dream of a decent football pitch that meets the rigours of our English weather into a reality.

?We?re delighted that our support is enabling them to finally move forward with this project.

?We hope that this work will enable people to enjoy the facility for years to come and look forward to seeing the teams in action in the very near future.?

SITA Trust provides funding for projects that enhance communities and enrich nature through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Fusionio brings 32TB Fusion ioScale SSDs to sma server clusters

Fusion-io has made a name for its Fusion ioDrive solid-state drives by selling them to the largest of enterprises -- the sort that crave thousands of servers. Not everyone wants that level of computing muscle, though, which is why the pro-grade storage firm is now selling the Fusion ioScale to a much wider audience. Cloud service hosts and other, smaller companies just have to buy a (relatively) paltry 100 or more of the PCI Express-based drives, which include both slim 1.6TB and full-size, 3.2TB versions. Neither will be cheap for datacenters when prices start at $3.89 per gigabyte, although Fusion-io is vowing better deals for those buying in buik. We also suspect that the time saved by moving to fast flash storage could be worthwhile in itself.

Online social networks: the next generation of idea sharing

Online social networking has become a commonplace online today, it is an accepted even an expected function for online users of 2013. The popularity of social networking websites are on a constant rise while this technology is being utilized and observed for new commercial and educational purposes every day.

The internet is relatively new technology, as Robert Darnton, American Cultural historian said that internet is a revolution that ?took place yesterday or the day before, depending on how you measure it.? The first real use of the internet was email, and next came online pages with graphical interfaces in the form of websites. Since then eCommerce, voice and video communication, blogs and instant messaging services emerged rapidly, and it was only natural that people felt the need to connect with each other ? so the services of social networking emerged.

Social networking service is being researched and observed by scholars every day ? its trends, history and future. There are numerous research materials into social networking sites and even an annual in-depth analysis released by separate companies and enterprises. One such report easily divides the best and worst of social networking websites.

The good part includes; cheap/free way to communicate, networking, new interest, information sharing, opportunities, business purpose and the fact that most social networking sites are very easy to use. Some bad parts are that one can get addicted to it (forcing employers to limit the usage of social networking websites to prevent inefficiency during office hours), identity theft, wrong/negative information, not profitable in a big way and a huge problem with privacy.

To some people the negative factors of social networking sites may outweigh the positive factors, but it is always important to remember its overall use. So, while it is legal to download files from the internet, it is not legal to download copyrighted files and the social network community is greatly benefiting from; science, globalization, education, employment, opportunities and businesses. In short ? it is a great place to get information. Before, social gatherings did the job, but now we have our online community to tell us what?s going on or when the world is likely to end (again).

Is social networking a whole new generation of communication? www.gignitesocialmedia.com, a website which analyzes social networking sites asked several internet researchers/scholars a question: For businesses and brands that are just starting to ramp up in 2012, what new social networking trends do you see going forward? Phil Gerbyshak, one of the analysts answers, ?I think the days of one social network fitting everyone?s needs are over. Users want more thats of interest to them, and they don?t want to wade through all the other crap that?s out there to get there. I think we?ll see more niche networks around something in common, be they locations or interests.

I also think we?ll see more social video happening. Spreecast is already doing a darn good job of this, UStream is pretty good at it, and I expect others will as well.

Lastly, I believe we?ll see a shift in the way people talk about social media, and they?ll just come to expect that there will be a way to share, comment, and offer their insights into anything a business has to say ? and if your business doesn?t, you will lose even more market share.?

The reason that social networking services are constantly expanding is that it is closely tied with business and commerce. Users of online social networking services are both consumers and suppliers ? a new trend emerged with this phenomenon.

The future of online social network looks, of course, very bright indeed ? as the businesses makes sure of this ? but even so, as MySpace colorfully illustrated to us, they can decline. Hopefully, with strong ties with other industries around the world, online social networks can become more than our everyday life and in a hundred years;don?t be surprised to see a post or a ?tweet? from someone claiming the date when the world will end.

Suddenly unwanted, Tebow's NFL future uncertain

By DENNIS WASZAK Jr.

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:43 p.m. ET Jan. 15, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) - From nearly unstoppable to nearly invisible.

Tim Tebow was two wins from the Super Bowl a year ago. Now, he's pretty much a player without a team - likely to be released by the New York Jets after one frustrating season and his hometown team in Jacksonville already pulling in the welcome mat.

Even Tebow doesn't how this will unfold. A backup role on another NFL team? A position change? The Canadian Football League?

"I don't know what my future holds, but I know who holds my future," the devout Christian said in a recent interview with Fox Business Network, his only public comments since his strange Jets season ended.

"And, in that," he added, "there is a lot of peace and a lot of comfort."

Tebow barely played for the Jets last season. "An absolute mess," is the way recently retired special teams coordinator Mike Westhoff described it. Tebow has two years left on his contract, but New York is expected to trade or release him in the next few weeks. So far, destination unknown.

"I can't imagine a scenario in which he'll be a Jacksonville Jaguar," new general manager David Caldwell declared last week. "Even if he's released."

While there's an outside chance Tebow could remain a New Yorker, depending on the whims of the still -to-be-hired GM, it appears highly unlikely.

So, that's two NFL teams down - the only ones, at that, who showed any interest last offseason when Denver shopped him - and the 25-year-old Tebow's options appear to be dwindling.

"Tim Tebow is an extremely popular individual - or, he was," said former Cowboys executive Gil Brandt, now an analyst for NFL.com. "I think his popularity has waned significantly the last three or four months."

The buzz these days belongs to young quarterbacks like Washington's Robert Griffin III, Seattle's Russell Wilson, Indianapolis' Andrew Luck and San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick. It seems so long ago now that Tebowing - his signature dropping to a knee for a prayerful pose - was all the rage.

But even Tebow never Tebowed during the regular season for the Jets. Not once. Quite a fall for a Heisman Trophy winner and two-time national champion with the University of Florida, and whose No. 15 Broncos jersey ranked second in national sales to Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers in 2011.

"I think it's fair to say," Tebow acknowledged last month, "that I'm a little disappointed."

The Jets had every intention of trying to make things work with Tebow when general manager Mike Tannenbaum surprisingly acquired him from Denver last March - after Peyton Manning arrived - for a fourth-round draft pick. But once Tebow got on the field, something went woefully wrong.

Tebow went from being considered a key part of Rex Ryan's offense to almost non-existent. Offensive coordinator Tony Sparano didn't know how to use him effectively, and Tebow wasn't particularly productive when he got his few snaps in the wildcat-style formation. He made his biggest mark on special teams as the personal punt protector, and did all he could to hide his frustration at not playing. But the numbers said it all: a mere 102 yards rushing and 6-of-8 passing for 39 yards. And, the most damning stat of all: zero touchdowns.

"I would've liked to see him get a chance," defensive end Mike DeVito said.

It didn't even come when Mark Sanchez struggled so badly that he was benched for the first time in his career. Instead of going with Tebow, the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, Ryan went with third-stringer Greg McElroy. Tebow now had a bruised ego to go along with the two broken ribs that limited him earlier in the season.

"Every opportunity you get, you want to make the most of," Tebow said a few weeks before the season ended, "and I'd have loved to have more of an opportunity to just play quarterback."

Acquiring Tebow ultimately led to Tannenbaum and Sparano losing their jobs. And, it clouded Tebow's prospects in the NFL. No matter what, though, he insists he's a quarterback.

Eric Crouch, a fellow former Heisman Trophy winner, knows what he's going through. Crouch was Tebow before Tebow, a tremendous athlete who played quarterback at the University of Nebraska but was told he'd have to switch positions to have a future in the NFL.

"I came out of a running attack at Nebraska where we didn't read a whole lot of passing defenses," said Crouch, now a college analyst for Fox Sports. "So, I was probably a much bigger project than what Tebow is. Sometimes you get labeled a running quarterback, but what you want is to be labeled a dual threat or a passing quarterback who can run."

Crouch was drafted in the third round in 2002 as a wide receiver by St. Louis, switched to safety and was in camp with Green Bay and Kansas City the next few years before playing in NFL Europe. In 2006, he played three games at quarterback for Toronto of the CFL. Crouch is done with football now after giving it one final shot with his hometown Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League in 2011.

"Listen, I learned a long time ago that I should've just done what I felt was the right thing to do, which was hold out on people changing me to what they think was best for me," Crouch said. "I was playing quarterback since I was 9 years old. I think the most important thing I would tell Tim is, you've got to listen to yourself on this one.

"There are going to be a lot of people telling Tebow what he should or shouldn't do."

Like the folks who insist a position switch is the only way Tebow will remain in the NFL - whether that's as a tight end, receiver, halfback, fullback or safety.

"I just don't think he will ever be a quarterback in the NFL," Brandt said. "I think he's really smart, but I don't think he has the mental quickness at the position. The second thing is, he just is not accurate."

Tebow, reportedly working out in Arizona with a personal trainer, could still land somewhere in the league as a project for an offensive coordinator willing to learn from the Jets' mistakes.

"He's still worth a try and I think somebody will sign him, but it'll be under the condition that it will be as something other than as a quarterback," said Brandt, who thinks Tebow will stay on offense. "If Al Davis were still here, he'd take him in a second and try to turn him into a tight end for the Raiders."

Or, Tebow could simply swallow his pride, head to Canada and become a huge star there with the CFL's wide-open fields. And then, who knows? Maybe he would come back to the United States - the same route Warren Moon, Doug Flutie and Jeff Garcia took to NFL stardom.

"There's no shame at all in going to the CFL," Crouch said. "They'd take him right now and he'd get a lot of tape, and if he's there two years, he'd have 50 games under his belt reading defenses and coverages. Let the NFL scouts make their decisions then.

"And, hey, he might have so much fun there actually playing, he might not want to ever come back."

Russian Railways Sues Apple Over Trademark Infringement Online In The Apple Store

RZD logoEurope's state railways continue to pick up steam in their lawsuits against Apple. Today, it emerged that Russian Railways has filed a trademark lawsuit?against the iPhone maker. The reason is still not entirely clear: the public statement released by the RZD (Russian Railways' abbreviation in Russian) only notes that the infringement relates to the RZD registered trademark, certificate number 341333, and the use of it in the "online Apple Store" in pictures. This may have to do with third-party apps in the App Store that use Russian Railway's logo without permission.

Japan Airlines 787 leaks fuel at Boston airport

SEATTLE ? On Tuesday morning in Boston, Japan Air Lines flight 7, a Boeing 787 Dreamliner,? spilled 40 gallons of fuel onto a taxiway before it could take off.? Maintenance crews at Logan International Airport quickly cleaned it up. ?

KING 5 news has learned the problem involved a leaking refueling valve in the wing,? and the problem was fixed and the plane continued onto Tokyo.

On Monday, the problem was much bigger. JAL flight 8, another 787 inbound from Tokyo to Boston, caught fire 15 minutes after the passengers and crew got off.
?? ?
On Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board was busy inspecting the rear electrical bay behind the wing, where the lithium ion battery involved in yesterday?s fire was stored.? A photo released by the safety agency showed investigator Robert Swaim inspecting the area,? showing fairly limited smoke damage to the floor where the battery is secured, and nearby electrical racks holding other equipment.?? When firefighters arrived on the scene Monday, smoke could be seen pouring out of the rear baggage hold door.
? ?
But the NTSB says the battery, which works in conjunction with the auxiliary power unit, which keeps the planes electrical system functioning while at the gate, was severely damaged.
? ?
The NTSB is now sending in additional investigators to look at ?airworthiness and fire and emergency response.? ?

Boeing has a small team, and the Japan Transport Safety Board has a representative.? The cause of the fire has not been determined, but right now the battery is where the investigation is focused.

JAL's grounded Boeing Dreamliner leaks fuel in tests

TOKYO/SEATTLE (Reuters) - Japan Airlines Co (JAL) said on Sunday that a Boeing Co 787 Dreamliner jet undergoing checks in Tokyo following a fuel leak at Boston airport last week had leaked fuel during tests earlier in the day.

An open valve on the aircraft caused fuel to leak from a nozzle on the left wing used to remove fuel, a company spokeswoman said. The jet is out of service after spilling about 40 gallons (roughly 150 liters) of fuel onto the airport taxiway in Boston due to a separate valve-related problem.

In Boston, a different valve on the plane opened, causing fuel to flow from the center tank to the left main tank. When that tank filled up, it overflowed into a surge tank and out through a vent. The spill happened as the plane was taxiing for takeoff on a flight to Tokyo on January 8. It made the flight about four hours later.

The causes of both incidents are unknown, the JAL spokeswoman added. There is no timetable for the plane to return to service.

On Friday, the U.S. government ordered a wide-ranging review of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner, citing concern over a battery that caught fire on January 7, also on a JAL plane in Boston, and other problems. The government and Boeing insisted the passenger jet remained safe to fly.

The 787 represents the boldest bet Boeing has made on a new plane in more than a decade, and because the aircraft required billions to develop, much of the company's financial performance is riding on its success. Boeing is trying to double production to 10 jets a month this year to cash in on nearly 800 orders.

The eight airlines that operate the 50 jets delivered so far have expressed support for it, saying the mishaps are teething problems common with most new airplanes, and the 787's fuel savings make it an important addition to their fleets. JAL and local rival All Nippon Airways Co fly 24 Dreamliners.

The review follows a slew of incidents that have focused intense scrutiny on the new plane. While many of the issues that have dogged the 787 are typically considered routine, their occurrence in quick succession on an aircraft that incorporates major new technology and has not seen wide use yet has sparked concerns about safety.

In December, a 787 operated by United Airlines and bound from Houston to Newark, New Jersey, was forced to land in New Orleans after a warning light in the cockpit indicated a generator had failed.

Boeing later said a faulty circuit board produced in Mexico and supplied by UTC Aerospace Systems, a unit of United Technologies , had produced a false reading in the cockpit. A UTC Aerospace spokesman declined to comment.

Also in December, two other 787s suffered problems with electrical panels. The fire on January 7 started when a lithium-ion battery used in an auxiliary power system ignited while the plane was parked at the gate. It burned for about 40 minutes before firefighters put the flames out, and smoke entered the cabin. Passengers and crew had already left the aircraft.

On December 5, U.S. regulators said there was a manufacturing fault in 787 fuel lines and advised operators to make extra inspections to guard against engine failures.

Last week, the plane had seven reported incidents, ranging from the fire to a cracked cockpit window.

Report: Climate shifts are changing life in US

Global warming is already changing America from sea to rising sea and is affecting how Americans live, a massive new federally commissioned report says.

A special panel of scientists convened by the government issued Friday a 1,146-page draft report that details in dozens of ways how climate change is already disrupting the health, homes and other facets of daily American life. It warns that those disruptions will increase in the future.

"Climate change affects everything that you do," said report co-author Susan Cutter, director of the Hazards and Vulnerability Research Institute at the University of South Carolina. "It affects where you live, where you work and where you play and the infrastructure that you need to do all these things. It's more than just the polar bears."

The blunt report takes a global environmental issue and explains what it means for different U.S. regions, for various sectors of the economy and for future generations.

The National Climate Assessment doesn't say what should be done about global warming. White House science adviser John Holdren writes that it will help leaders, regulators, city planners and even farmers figure out what to do to cope with coming changes.

And climate change is more than warmer temperatures, the report said.

"Human-induced climate change means much more than just hotter weather," the report says, listing rising seas, downpours, melting glaciers and permafrost, and worsening storms. "These changes and other climatic changes have affected and will continue to affect human health, water supply, agriculture, transportation, energy, and many other aspects of society."

Scores of disruptions
The report uses the word "threat" or variations of it 198 times, and versions of the word "disrupt" another 120 times.

If someone were to list every aspect of life changed or likely to be altered from global warming, it would easily be more than 100, said two of the report's authors.

The report, written by team of 240 scientists, is required every four years by law. The first report was written in 2000. No report was issued while George W. Bush was president. The next one came out in 2009. This report, paid for by the federal government, is still a draft and not officially a government report yet. Officials are seeking public comments for the next three months.

"There is so much that is already happening today," said study co-author Katharine Hayhoe, director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University. "This is no longer a future issue. It's an issue that is staring us in the face today"

This version of the report is far more blunt and confident in its assessments than previous ones, Hayhoe said: "The bluntness reflects the increasing confidence we have" in the science and day-to-day realities of climate change.

Threat to health
The report emphasizes that human-caused global warming is doing more than just altering the environment we live in. It's characterized as a threat to our bodies, homes, offices, roads, airports, power plants, water systems and farms.

"Climate change threatens human health and well-being in many ways, including impacts from increased extreme weather events, wildfire, decreased air quality, diseases transmitted by insects, food and water, and threats to mental health," the report said.

    3. Mysterious structures in China are likely factories
    4. First Facebook? Pompeii's 'wall posts'

"Climate change and its impacts threaten the well-being of urban residents in all 13 regions of the U.S.," the report said. "Essential local and regional infrastructure systems such as water, energy supply, and transportation will increasingly be compromised by interrelated climate change impacts."

For example, the report details 13 airports that have runways that could be inundated by rising sea level. It mentions that thawing Alaskan ground means 50 percent less time to drill for oil. And overall it says up to $6.1 billion in repairs need to be made to Alaskan roads, pipelines, sewer systems, buildings and airports to keep up with global warming.

Sewer systems across America may overflow more, causing damages and fouling lakes and waterways because of climate change, the report said. The sewer overflows into Lake Michigan alone will more than double by the year 2100, the report said.

While warmer weather may help some crops, others will be hurt because of "weeds, diseases, insect pests and other climate change-induced stresses," the report said. It said weeds like kudzu do better with warmer weather and are far more likely to spread north.

"Several populations ? including children, the elderly, the sick, the poor, tribes and other indigenous people ? are especially vulnerable to one or more aspects of climate change," the report said.
