News: 2012 Music Sales | The Stool Pigeon

Album revenues down 11% despite digital sales hike, singles make a comeback

What did Santa bring you in his sack this year? If your name happens to be The Music Industry, he brought an 11.2% drop in album sale revenues as CD-shaped Xmas packages became an increasingly distant memory for most.

The latest lump of coal-shaped news for the record biz does at least come with a few sprinkled bits of candy ? digital album sales were up 14.7%, while overall single sales enjoyed a 6% hike to 188.6 million units, 99.6% of that figure coming from downloads. All twenty top-selling singles of the year sold more than 500,000 copies.

The digital album sales increase was not enough to compensate for a 19.5% decline in year-on-year physical album sales, however ? and with figures like that, it?s little wonder HMV are reduced to flogging bags of popcorn in the DVD sections of their stores. Could 2013 be the year the once-proud retail giant goes to the giant dog kennel in the sky?

As if to underline the shift from physical to digital modes of entertainment consumption, the downloaded videos, music and games industry became a billion-pound racket for the first time in 2012, meaning that a quarter of the entertainment market is now digital.

This year should also see plenty more scratching of industry heads over how to better monetise music streaming services ? according to BPI/OCC stats, British music fans streamed 3.7 billion tunes in 2012, roughly equivalent to 140 music streams for every household in the UK [BBC].

And what was the most streamed track on Spotify in the UK this New Year?s Eve? Why it was ?Gangnam Style? by PSY, of course.
